REFINED | Opening Reception
Join us Friday, June 19 from 5–7 PM at Gallery MAR for REFINED, an exhibition of new work by Joseph Alleman and Clay Wagstaff.
Two artists. Two distinct visions of the American West. One rooted in the extraordinary beauty of the everyday, the other revealing the hidden structure and spirit beneath the landscape. Together, their work invites us to look deeper.
JOSEPH ALLEMAN
Born in San Francisco and raised near Joshua Tree before settling in Utah’s Salt Lake Valley, Joseph Alleman never really left the landscape. He just learned to look harder at it.
Working in both oil and watercolor, Alleman’s paintings are celebrated for their visionary portrayals of the contemporary American West. Barns. Fields. Small towns. Subjects that might seem ordinary until he’s done with them.
As Alleman puts it: “There is a beauty within the everyday and ordinary that only painting can reveal.”
CLAY WAGSTAFF
Born in Kanab, Utah, Clay Wagstaff grew up immersed in the landscape that continues to inspire his work today. Now based in the tiny town of Tropic, Utah, he paints the West with equal parts intuition and precision.
Guided by Fibonacci proportions and dynamic symmetry, Wagstaff creates sweeping skies, intricate forests, and compositions that feel both grounded and transcendent. He often leaves traces of his original sketch visible beneath the paint, hinting at what he calls “a blueprint or spiritual design behind everything.”
The everyday, elevated. Always at Gallery MAR.
