"The great folk singer Harry Chapin wrote a song that included the line “music was his life, it was not his livelihood.” There are so many people who live to perform, paint, be creative. Only a few are able to make it their livelihood. Community theater and the arts provide an avenue for everyday people to express their love for their art and provides their friends and neighbors the venue to experience high quality performances that enrich all of our lives."

"Community theatre creates an outlet for people of all ages to connect, grow, and create memories. I can confidently say that Community theatre (Civic specifically!) has truly made me the person I am today. It has been a second home for me, where I learned confidence and dedication, built lifelong friendships, and found a community that has supported me through so many stages of my life. In an often disconnected world, it is important to have an outlet like community theatre to make meaningful connections and work together to share our love of theatre with audiences."

Support Civic Theatre’s future while enjoying an unforgettable evening of music and community. Join us on June 13th at the Payne & Mencias Palladium for CIVIC IN CONCERT: CHESS, a concert presentation of the iconic musical featuring a full live orchestra and a 40-member vocal ensemble.

Proceeds from this special benefit performance will support Civic Theatre’s new Scene Shop Project, helping us build a new home for the scenic construction and production work that brings our shows to life. With our current scene shop facing redevelopment in Midtown Carmel, this project is essential to ensuring Civic Theatre can continue creating exceptional productions for years to come. The new facility will also help sustain and expand opportunities for the talented local artists, craftspeople, technicians, and artisans whose work makes our productions possible.

CIVIC IN CONCERT: CHESS Spotlight on Michael Krauter!

Why do you think community theatre is important in today's world?
"Community theatre has brought so much joy to my life over the past 20-something years. Growing up I participated almost passively–it was simply part of my life, something I naturally stepped into because my older siblings were involved. However, now as a young adult, knowing how difficult it can be to find a good community to surround yourself with, I find that my participation is 100% active and not passive at all. The more effort I put into community theatre, the more I get out of it–Friendships, connections, creative outlets, recognition, and, most importantly, a truly rewarding challenge. That's what makes community theatre so important. Buying a ticket, showing up, and appreciating the work helps sustain something meaningful that so many people have poured their time and passion into creating."
