A heron quietly perched on a small boat floating on the water's surface, with the water's surface depicted largely in silver at both ends. The heron, boat, and reeds are arranged in exquisite balance with gold and silver inlay. Edo era.

Beautiful late Edo-period iron tsuba featuring a Phoenix (Hōō 鳳凰) in Japanese decorative art.

The Hōō was introduced to Japan from China during the Asuka period (6th–7th centuries) and became an important symbol of peace, virtue, harmony, prosperity, and the arrival of a righteous ruler.

Unlike the Western phoenix, which traditionally dies and rises from its ashes, the Japanese Hōō does not represent death and rebirth. It is said to appear only during times of great peace or when a virtuous ruler is born.

Feeding or honoring the turtle shows a person living in harmony with nature and earning the favor of the sea.

A minogame (蓑亀) is a legendary Japanese turtle covered in long, trailing strands of algae that look like a straw raincoat. Japan is a country that has many different traditions and legends of turtles. One of its most famous is the mythological giant turtle known as the minogame (蓑亀, or 'straw raincoat-turtle' due to the tail resembling a farmer's straw coat). The minogame is regarded as a very auspicious creature in Japanese culture and has made appearances in arts, crafts, and even in modern-day popular culture!

The minogame is said to live at least a thousand years (with some living up to 10,000 years!) and have a long, hairy tail, which is actually seaweed and algae that have grown on its shell due to its ripe old age! It has very similar to the real-life common tortoise, which can live for hundreds of years. In Japanese culture, the minogame represents longevity and wisdom, and is a long-revered symbol of both. In art, it is often shown with other gods and symbols of longevity, such as the crane ( symbols of longevity and good fortune), or Taoist deities such as Jurōjin. The minogame is also depicted with the Three Jewels, which represent fortune.

The other side of the tsuba represents a broom and rake.
In Japanese culture, the broom (hōki) and the rake (kumade or deki) are deeply tied to spiritual purification, mindfulness, and good fortune. Rather than mere utility tools, sweeping and raking are viewed as meditative acts that clear away physical dust and spiritual impurities (kegare), honoring both the home and the natural world.

Approximately 68x4mm. Overall very good condition and awesome details on that tsuba that would be a great addition to your collection!
