In 1797, our building was the scene of a violent encounter between law enforcement and a local suspect that played out much like a scene from the 1990s Deadwood movie.
Judge John Creigh was meeting with the local sheriff when a man barged in and fired a shot, feeling less than happy that a warrant had been issued for him. The shot narrowly missed, and he was put in jail. His family and friends then arrived that evening to object and were also arrested.
At the time, the part of our building where this may likely have happened was set further back from the street. When you walk our back hallway, you're in a much older section.
