“Investing in children is investing in overall healthcare!” 🩺
The brilliant Dr. Jyoti Thapaliya presented her research as the Recipient of the 2025 Summer Faculty Research Grant! In her work, she carefully removes the bandaid in examining the factors for undiagnosed asthma in Asian children compared to Black, White, and Hispanic children. Her findings suggested that policy changes, healthcare centers (and lack thereof), and insurance coverages were the leading factors of undiagnosed asthma in children.
Congratulations once again, Dr. Thapaliya! We love to see what more you accomplish in your future endeavors!

Coming back from our Spring Break, we have our Faculty Summer Research Grant Lecture!! The lovely Dr. Thapaliya will give her lecture on the role of healthcare in regard to children who are economically disadvantaged.

You don’t want to miss this! We’ll be at the Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater on Monday, March 23, from 4:30-5:45

This happened to be our largest Series ever hosted, with a record of almost 40 students attending this event!

Our very own GLAAD Award Winning Sekiya Dorsett was proud to present her research with the Center! Her research, titled “Processing Black Skin in Film and Through Film,” examines the barriers that black and darker skin tones undergo in cinematography. Through her research, Prof Dorsett aims to be the catalyst that allows the realm of cinema to be cast in a better light, one warm skin tone at a time.

Thank you for showing us the ways in which darker skin tones have been systemically and even technologically challenged when it comes to cinema. Your work showcases the crucial detail that skin tones come in all different shades, and finding a better way to represent darker tones opens the door of proper representation on the big screen.

Students gained insights on several protest movements from The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom to the recent No Kings protests.

A packed house for Scott Brinton’s Colloquia on Suburban News Disparities! Thank you to everyone who joined us for an eye-opening and engaging discussion. Brinton shed light on the untold stories of communities of color and shared impactful findings from his research near Hofstra.
