The history of chess can be traced back to ancient India, where the game was known as chaturanga, meaning "four divisions of the military." The game was played on an 8x8 board and featured four different types of pieces: infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots. Each player had 16 pieces, and the object of the game was to checkmate the opponent's king.
