Happy 13th Birthday, Jose! 🥳

Jose is a bull snake, one of North America's largest snake species. Bull snakes can be very intimidating, but it is just their way of saying, “Hey, I’m down here! Please leave me alone!”…..they just do this by hissing very loudly and mock striking. If you respect their personal space, you'll get along just fine! Jose has been living at the Reptile House since 2022. He enjoys eating out of puzzle or forage feeders.

Happy Horseshoe Crab Day! 🥳

If you've walked the beach along the Delaware Bay in May or June, you're likely to have come across the majestic horseshoe crab! They are spawning this time of year, which involves the females coming up on the beach to lay their eggs, while males follow closely to fertilize them. Our staff participates in a beach survey during this time to help scientists calculate the number of spawning crabs on the beaches. The best time to see the horseshoe crabs spawn is at high tide around the full and new moon! 🌕🌑

We are saddened to announce the passing of our snow leopards, Maliha and Bataar. Maliha was euthanized in April due to an unexpected medical event. She was 13 years old. Bataar was euthanized in early June after a year of treatment for age-related health conditions. At almost 18 years old, he was one of the oldest snow leopards in the Country.

A crowd favorite, the pair was often seen sunbathing together on their outdoor platform. They were matched as a breeding pair by the Snow Leopard Species Survival Program but never produced cubs.

Bataar was the first snow leopard housed in the Zoo's new building when it opened in 2015. He successfully had cubs with his first mate, Tysa, before she was transferred to another facility on a breeding recommendation. Maliha joined Bataar in 2021, and the two remained together for the rest of their lives.

Happy 1st Birthday to Ember! 🥳

Ember is a red panda, a unique species most closely related to the raccoon family. Red pandas are mostly found in the eastern Himalayas in temperate forests where their favorite food grows - bamboo! Ember is sometimes a little shy and cautious, but she has warmed up to her keepers and is enthusiastic about training. She is very smart and learns quickly. She can often be found lying stretched out on a branch in her yard in the warmer weather. Ember recently started spending time getting acquainted with her new friend, Wally. and seems to enjoy keeping him in line!

Happy 5th Birthday, Capychino! 🥳

Capychino is a member of our capybara herd. This species is found throughout most of South America, and since they are semi-aquatic, they live near bodies of water. Capychino was born here at the zoo. He is Budette's first (and favorite) child. He is shy around new people, but once he's comfortable, he is very goofy! He enjoys scent marking his enrichment and interacting with his neighbor, Goomba. He also loves rolling in mud, then coming into the barn to shake it all off on his clean bed and his keepers! 🤎💦

Happy 7th Birthday Squash! 🦨

Hi! My name is Squash, and despite what you've heard, I'm not that stinky. (Okay, maybe a little.)

I'm a striped skunk and an ambassador animal, which means I get paid in snacks to teach people how awesome skunks are. My keepers say I have "adaptations," which is a fancy grown-up word for cool skunk superpowers. I have bold stripes, an amazing sense of smell, and most skunks have a famous stinky defense system!

But we're more than just our smell. Skunks help nature by eating insects and other pests, so if you see one of my wild cousins, give them some space and let them do their important skunk business.

Love,
Squash 🐾

Happy 1st Birthday, Gwen! 🥳

Gwen is a member of our Grant's zebra herd. This species is endemic to Africa and is the smallest subspecies of Plains zebra. Gwen is our little survivor. Her mother, Gretta, passed away last July. Gwen was strong and was willing to drink milk from her keepers. She's now integrated into the herd and hangs out with Stardust the majority of the time. She can be identified by a little spot on her left cheek.
