McKinley National Monument
Architect: Harold Van Buren, New York, NY
The monument sits on a 26 acre National Landmark and is dedicated to the 25th President; William McKinley who is entomed there along with his wife Ida Saxton McKinley and their two daughter's, Katie and Ida.
The site was often visited by McKinley and he had suggested a monument to the soldiers and sailors from Stark County to be placed there.
Construction began in June 1905 and was finished in 1907.
Ohio supplied over 2 million bricks, concrete and much of the labor. Massachusetts provided the exterior granite, Tennessee the marble walls, pedestal and part of the floor. Seven other states provided material. School children collected pennies for the project. $578,000 was raised.
The sky light has 45 stars representing the 45 states in the Union at the time of McKinley'd death.
There are 108 steps to the monument.
The William McKinley Presidential Library and Musuem are also located on the grounds.
