There are weddings I remember because the dance floor was absolutely insane.

And then there are weddings I remember because of who was standing on those dance floors.

Sunday night was another Perry wedding—which means another former student—and those will ALWAYS be my favorite weddings to DJ.

I remember Corry Douglas when she was 14 years old.

Sunday, I got to watch Corry Robbins dance with her husband, Beau, and their adorable little boy, Hunter.

Yeah. That one got me. Perry weddings ALWAYS get me.

Corry and Beau were an absolute joy from beginning to end. Easy-going, trusting, and seemingly determined simply to enjoy being married. They gave me a handful of songs they loved for cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing, then largely handed me the musical keys and said, essentially, you've got this.

And because it was a Sunday wedding, the dance floor behaved exactly like Sunday wedding dance floors tend to behave. Three or four songs with everybody out there. Then everybody disappeared. Then suddenly they were back. Then gone again. 😂 It came in waves, and the evening wrapped up a little early—as Sunday weddings often do—but it was still an incredibly fun night.

Dinner deserves its own mention, too. Farro's brought in a wood-fired pizza buffet with some seriously creative pizzas, and judging from the reaction in the room, Corry and Beau made a VERY good call there.

But my favorite moment had nothing to do with music or pizza.

It was watching Corry and Beau with Hunter.

The three of them shared a family dance, and watching them together absolutely melted me. They're wonderful parents, and there was something incredibly special about standing there watching this little family together while simultaneously remembering the bride as a freshman in my English classroom.

I've thought about this many times over the years: I thoroughly enjoyed my ninth-grade English teacher, Rick Kidwell. He was a phenomenal teacher. He is a terrific person. We still talk from time to time on social media today.

Would I have put Mr. Kidwell in charge of my wedding?

Hahahahaha.

Absolutely not.

And that's why this never escapes me. My former students don't simply invite their old English teacher to their weddings because they remember me fondly. They hand me the microphone. They give me their timeline and their music. They trust me to run the celebration itself—to be the person steering one of the biggest nights of their lives.

I must have done *something* right during those years at Perry. Corry is one of more than 200 former students who have welcomed me to attend and have trusted me to lead those celebrations

Sunday wasn't the wildest party of my weekend. It wasn't the biggest dance floor or the hardest-partying crowd.

But standing inside White Rose Barn and looking across the room at a former student I remembered at 14—now a wife, a mother, and this genuinely wonderful woman?

That was the highlight of my weekend.

Congratulations to the new Mr. & Mrs. Yoder! ❤️

Saturday night took me to Heartland on Heritage in Magnolia to celebrate Jenna and Stephen.

Stephen found his smile when the donkey arrived. (Long story. 😂) But that smile got considerably bigger—and *permanent*—the moment he watched Jenna walk down the aisle.

Mother Nature had absolutely no interest in cooperating with anyone's wedding plans. The rain came down in a torrential downpour, forcing the planned outdoor ceremony to Plan B. (For once, I was safely inside and nowhere near the rain 😁).

Plan B turned out to be beautiful, warm, and intimate. Jenna still got her walk down the aisle. Stephen still got that moment when he first saw his bride. And ultimately, that's the stuff that matters.

I really can't say enough about these two. Jenna and Stephen are kind, welcoming, personable, genuine, and incredibly thoughtful. Every conversation I've had with them has been rewarding in ways that have very little to do with weddings and everything to do with who they are as people. They're simply the kind of couple you genuinely enjoy being around.

And then they fed me.

Oh. My. God.

A large part of Stephen's family is Amish, and they catered the wedding. I have been known to drive a hundred miles out of my way for a good Amish restaurant, so homemade Amish cooking served under a barn in the Ohio countryside was basically my personal version of heaven. 😂 In 28 years and more than 700 weddings, I genuinely don't know that I've ever had a better wedding dinner.

But I digress. 😁

Because Jenna and Stephen also came to PARTY—and so did everybody they invited. The dance floor stayed busy, the laughter never stopped, and those smiles I mentioned earlier never really went away. Stephen even managed to work “Amish Paradise” by Weird Al Yankovic into the evening near the end, because apparently the Amish catering wasn't enough commitment to the theme. 😂

I also got an unexpected bonus Saturday night: Payton and Hayden Herman, whose wedding I DJed back in May, were there! It was wonderful seeing them again, and naturally I had to steal them away for a photo. One of my favorite parts of doing this long enough is getting these little reunions with couples I've already had the privilege of celebrating.

A third photo was taken, as well. I took time to pose with Jenna's brother Jacob and his girlfriend Haylee. They told me I would be their DJ, too. Jacob just has to buy a ring and propose, and then they will be calling me. 😂

Jenna and Stephen, thank you for trusting me with such an important day. The rain may have changed the location of your ceremony, but it didn't change a damn thing about what made Saturday special. It was warm, joyful, funny, delicious, occasionally Amish-Paradise-level ridiculous, and completely, unmistakably you.

Congratulations to Emily & Kristen!

Friday night took me once again to Himelright Lodge in Akron, this time to celebrate these two beautiful brides—and what a night it turned out to be!

I tell my couples all of the time that something always goes wrong at a wedding. I also tell them that my job, as their DJ, is to make sure they never know that it has. Friday threw us a curveball that was a little too big to hide.

But I have to say: in the moment as their timeline unraveled, I was incredibly impressed by the two of them.

As things derailed, Emily and Kristen handled it with grace, patience, kindness, and—most importantly—smiles. They simply refused to let an unexpected problem define their wedding day. They were there to get married, celebrate with the people they love, and have one hell of a good time. And that's exactly what they did.

I also need to compliment their taste in music. 😉 These two made some wonderfully unconventional choices throughout the night—songs I don't often get to play at weddings and a few I never have—and they WORKED. Perfectly. There were several moments when I found myself thinking, 'Okay...these two actually know and understand music!' Emily and Kristen could probably take over my DJ booth without much trouble.

Oh—and they had a real, tiered wedding cake! ! 🎂

For those of you who read my blog, you are likely aware of my recent rant about the tragic rise of the cupcake. If you do, then you know how happy Emily and Kristen's wedding cake made me!

Beautiful cake, gorgeous flowers, and one of the more unusual cake toppers I've encountered—which, naturally, means I loved it.

Emily and Kristen, you both looked absolutely fabulous, you were an absolute joy to celebrate with, and the way you handled everything Friday night only made me admire you more.

Congratulations, ladies. ❤️ May the adventure be every bit as much fun as the first night.

I have a question.

Why does everyone at a wedding wait until the LAST 30 MINUTES to remember they have a favorite song?

Seriously. I need someone to explain this phenomenon to me.

The dance floor has been open for two or three hours. I've been standing there the entire time. I'm not difficult to find. I'm literally the overweight bald guy standing behind the giant glowing DJ booth playing music.

And people DO make requests throughout the night.

But then something happens when we hit that final half hour.

Suddenly, EVERYONE has a song.

"Can you play some Cardi B?"

"Do you have any Earth, Wind and Fire?"

"We haven't heard any Kanye!"

"Can you play this one song? I don't know what it's called, but it goes..."

Six people find it necessary to scroll through their Spotify playlists, to show me their "must plays," every one of them assuming—as a wedding DJ—that I have never heard of Fetty Wap, Cyndi Lauper, Sexxy Redd, or Ed Sheeran.

Meanwhile, I'm looking at the clock.

Twenty-eight minutes left.

Twenty-four.

Nineteen.

And there is now a small delegation forming in front of my booth, each person apparently unaware that the four people ahead of them have also just requested a song.

Folks, we have reached the musical equivalent of last call.

At this point, I already have the rest of the night mapped out in my head. I know how I'm bringing the energy down. I know what songs I still need to get to. I know how I want to finish. I'm already mentally heading toward "Closing Time."

And now I have 11 new requests.

I do not "math" well. I taught English / Language Arts for a reason. But I do know that there is not enough time left for your requests to play.

And so, I deliver the devastating news: "I'm sorry. I don't have enough time left."

You would think I had personally removed music from the wedding.

"But we've been waiting ALL NIGHT to hear that!"

My friend.

I HAVE ALSO BEEN HERE ALL NIGHT.

You could have asked me at 8:17.

You could have asked me at 9:03.

You could have asked me at 10:26.

But somehow, at 10:44, with an 11:00 p.m. ending, "Laffy Taffy" has suddenly become a matter of national importance.

And here's the thing: I actually like requests. They tell me what people want. Sometimes a guest gives me an idea I hadn't considered, and it sends the dance floor in a completely different—and better—direction.

So please, request away.

Just maybe don't wait until the DJ has one hand on "Last Dance" and the other hand mentally packing the speakers. 😂

Because there are only so many songs left in those final 30 minutes.

And apparently all 150 of you just remembered your favorite one.

I don't know if I played a role in making this happen, but I pestered the Canton Chamber of Commerce and the Stark County Convention and Visitors Bureau repeatedly over the last year — often and at length. I have been told that my blog made waves as well when I wrote about DJ Trivia at Starflyer Brewing Co. in February 2026. It doesn't matter to me if I played a role or not. What matters is it is happening! The Hall of Fame Hops Craft Brewery Trail will bring more money into the community and provide continued support for our local breweries! That was ALWAYS the goal!

Well, this was unexpected. 😂

It’s not often that my sister-in-law shows up working the same wedding Gail and I are working.

Especially when my sister-in-law isn't actually there. She was more than two hours away in Logan County.

One of the servers at a wedding we DJed at Blue Heron Brewery and Event Center was the absolute doppelgänger of Gail’s sister, Meredith. And I don’t mean she "kind of" looked like her. Gail and I were genuinely incredulous. The resemblance was uncanny enough that we kept looking at each other like, Are you SEEING this?!

Naturally, there was only one reasonable thing to do.

We had to get photographic evidence.

We asked her permission first, of course. And in so doing, we explained why these two complete strangers kept staring at her like she had somehow wandered into the wrong branch of our family tree. We took a few pictures, including one much requested photo from Gail's family.

I’m pretty sure “track down your sister-in-law’s secret twin while DJing a wedding” was never part of the job description.

But after 28 years, apparently we’re still finding new ones.

Mere, you have some explaining to do. 😂

Congratulations, Paige & Matthew Neff! ❤️

Every once in a while, I walk away from a wedding knowing that I’m going to remember it for a very long time. The wedding of Paige and Matthew Neff at Blue Heron Brewery and Event Center was one of those weddings.

And, once again, it was a Perry wedding! I never had Paige in class, but I did have her older sister—and Matron of Honor—Samantha, whose wedding I had the privilege of DJing many years ago. Getting to see Sam again and catch up with her was an unexpected bonus to an already wonderful night. There is something incredibly special about reaching this point in my career and finding myself celebrating with families whose lives have crossed mine before, sometimes in a classroom and sometimes at another wedding years earlier.

But this night belonged to Paige and Matthew, and I absolutely adored working with these two.

There is an ease about Paige and Matthew that is difficult to describe until you spend some time around them. They are gracious without ever seeming formal about it, generous without making a show of it, and wonderfully unflappable. Nothing seemed capable of rattling them. Every conversation came with a smile. Every interaction made you feel welcomed. And throughout the entire process, they had this remarkable way of making everything seem simple—not because they didn’t care about the details, but because they trusted the people around them and never lost sight of what the day was actually about.

That warmth extended far beyond the two of them. You could feel it throughout the room. Paige and Matthew are the kind of people who somehow make everyone around them feel comfortable, appreciated, and genuinely happy to be there. Watching them together was wonderful, but watching everyone else respond to them was every bit as telling. This was a room filled with people who absolutely love these two, and it wasn’t difficult to understand why.

And then we got to PARTY.

What a phenomenal reception. The dance floor was terrific, the energy was there all night, and everything simply clicked. There were no crises to solve, no strange detours, no moments where the night needed to be rescued or redirected. Everything worked. The celebration had a rhythm of its own, and Paige and Matthew were right at the center of it, smiling through all of it. As a DJ, there are nights when you spend much of your energy trying to manufacture momentum, and then there are nights like this one, when the people, the music, the atmosphere, and the couple all come together and you simply get to ride it. Last night was an absolute dream to DJ.

I’ve been trying to find a better word than perfect to describe it, but I’m not sure I need one. It really was the perfect night—not because every wedding needs to be flawless to be extraordinary, but because everything about this one simply felt right. Paige and Matthew have that effect. They make people feel at home. They make celebration seem effortless. They bring a warmth into a room that changes the room itself. And they made my job feel a whole lot less like work and a whole lot more like being lucky enough to have a really good seat for something special.

I have loved this 2026 wedding season more than I can adequately express, and Paige and Matthew gave me yet another night that reminded me exactly why.

Congratulations, Paige and Matthew! Thank you for your trust, your warmth, your smiles, and for being such an absolute joy to work with. I genuinely loved DJing your wedding, and if I could bottle nights like this one and take them with me to every wedding, I would.

Congratulations, Kristy & Kyle Walters! ❤️

Some weddings are simply a joy to be part of from beginning to end, and Kristy and Kyle’s wedding on Sunday, August 2, at The Ponds Venue in Beach City was absolutely one of them.

From our first meeting, Kristy and Kyle were incredibly warm, inviting, and thoughtful, and it was such a pleasure working with them to bring their vision for the day to life. But as much as I enjoyed working with them, I enjoyed simply watching them together even more. These two are absolutely adorable together, completely at ease with one another, and so obviously in love. There is a genuine happiness between them that is impossible to miss, and it was a thrill to have a front-row seat to it throughout their wedding day.

Their ceremony was beautiful, their reception was an absolute delight, and the entire day reflected the warmth and happiness Kristy and Kyle bring with them. And, of course, no wedding is complete without my requisite photo with the bride and groom—and, after 30 years in the classroom, I still get an extra kick out of running into former students at weddings and grabbing a photo with them, too. This one gave me a couple of those opportunities!

I’ve said it several times already, but 2026 has become one of my favorite wedding seasons in 28 years of doing this, and Kristy and Kyle’s wedding was unquestionably one of the highlights of an already AMAZING year. I would party with these two every day of the week if only that were possible.

Congratulations, Kristy and Kyle! Thank you for trusting me to be part of such an important day and for making me feel so welcome from the moment we met. I loved every minute of celebrating with you, and I wish you both a lifetime filled with the same love and happiness that surrounded you on your wedding day! ❤️
