Have you ever wondered who Farmer McDowell was?

This year’s 3rd Annual Farmer McDowell’s Play in a Day is named for a real person: Samuel “Sam” McMillan McDowell (1895–1988), a Peters Township farmer whose family worked roughly 175 acres surrounding what would later become Canonsburg Lake.

In 1947, Little Lake Theatre’s founders, William “Will” Disney and his mother, Edith, spotted a huge red barn and stopped to speak with the farmer tending livestock. That farmer was Sam McDowell. He ultimately agreed to lease the Disneys the barn and a small piece of his land- and that barn became Little Lake Theatre’s first home!

Decades later, on the morning of our first Play in a Day, our Artistic Director, Patrick, was driving down McDowell Lane toward the theatre, trying to decide what shared character prompt to give our teams (each playwright must include the character in their play.) He started thinking about the farmer whose name remained on the road- and whose generosity had helped make Little Lake possible.

And just like that, Farmer McDowell became our character.

The name stuck. He returned in 2025, and now it only feels right for the event itself to carry his name.

So, officially: Play in a Day is now The 3rd Annual Farmer McDowell’s Play in a Day.

On Saturday, October 3, over a hundred local theatre artists will converge on the newly restored Canon Theatre to write, rehearse and perform an entire evening of brand-new plays in just 24 hours. It will be the first performance on the Canon’s new stage—and the beginning of another chapter in Little Lake!

To the real Farmer McDowell: thank you for saying yes to a group of theatre people with a strange idea. Now, in Little Lake’s 78th season, we’re carrying that strange idea into a brand-new theatre…and making a few new plays along the way.

I have been immortalized. 🦝

Our brilliant graphic design partner, Amy Schaffer, has captured my likeness for Farmer McDowell’s Play in a Day, proving once and for all that I am not merely a social media manager. I am a muse.

In all seriousness, art at Little Lake is about more than what happens onstage. It’s in the writing, the performances, the ideas and the wonderful design work that brings every production to life.

Thank you, Amy, for making me look so distinguished. Please come experience Play in a Day and support the many talented humans working tirelessly around me. On Friday they’ll write a brand new play, and on Saturday you can come see it performed. 7 brand new plays. 1 day. That’s it, folks.
