"Evening Along the Eastern Shore" One tidal inlet among many on the nearly 12,000 mile shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay. My grandsons had fun catching blue crabs on a line—chicken-necking—from the end of a nearby boat dock. The vacation days were sweltering, and the humid nights were lit in the distance by heat lightning, but the area around St. Michaels was charming.

"Wind Blown Pollen on the Lake Surface" Western North Carolina is ranked in the top four areas in the country for pollen allergies, something I failed to consider when I moved here and settled into a community carved out of the Pisgah National Forest. As dearly as I love this place, that emotion is tested each spring as I sneeze, as my eyes water, and as my skin itches (hell, even my thumbs itch today). Times like this I bet even Adam and Eve suffered from hay fever (although I understand that the Garden of Eden had an excellent landscaping service).

"In the Cut" A dozen years ago this creek was a few feet wide and not more than two feet deep. Then construction on the hillside above it added about a dozen acres of impermeable surfaces: roofs, driveways, asphalt pavement. The resulting runoff scoured down to a depth of six feet before our HOA installed a series of check dams consisting of tree trunks and other woody debris placed every thirty yards or so. These have largely stabilized the erosion. Not even Hurricane Helene did much to affect the channel. Now our community leaders are taking the lesson and looking at similar solutions elsewhere in the neighborhood.
