FORT LAUDERDALE DAZE — from SEA TRIALS

Before the islands, before the passages, before half the stories I probably shouldn’t be telling… there was Fort Lauderdale.

Boats, beaches, canals, rum, questionable judgment, and Sunday mornings drifting through the Isles of Venice dressed like we had somewhere respectable to be.

We called it High Mass.

No preacher. No pews. Just friends, sunshine, music, and whatever the hell showed up in the boat.

Old-school sailors tattooed a pig on one foot and a rooster on the other. Not for luck in general — for one very specific promise: to never drown.

The logic was pure age-of-sail: pigs and roosters shipped in wooden crates. When a ship went down, the crates floated — and sometimes the pig and the rooster were the only souls that made it to shore. Sailors figured the animals carried some charm against the sea, and ink was cheaper than a lifeboat.

The US Navy's own historians trace the tradition back through centuries of seagoing superstition, alongside gold earrings, no bananas aboard, and never whistling on watch.
