After 3 years of patient waiting and negotiating to rent the Acme Market Building here in Canandaigua, the owner, ANDREW GUFFEY (of A. Guffey Plumbing & Heating), abruptly decided to NOT rent to us, in order for us to re-open FORALL Theater here in Canandaigua.

I took him at his word, and believed him for 3 years, but i see now he never intended to rent the space to ANYONE and his word, sadly, means nothing.

Remember years ago when a person's word was their honor, and could be taken seriously?

We just gave him a free 3 year reprise from the city giving him a hard time about having a huge building on South Main, sitting empty for 20 years!

After 2 years of talking and waiting he said his lawyer was going to draft a lease 5 months ago. Then two months later he said there were changes that needed to be made and he would get me a copy "sometime".
That never happened and was never mentioned again.

Then last week he asked ME to write up a lease to give to his attorney.
Why was it my responsibility to draw up a lease?
Name one owner or landlord of a property who asks their potential renter/tenant to write the lease?

But I did, and told him that everything in my draft was just that, a DRAFT.
I told him I would change it to whatever he wanted.
But then he stated I changed "terms" on him, and he "did not want to be toyed with".

REALLY?

He hasalso stated in the past, multiple times to both Amy and I, that he doesn't care about the money. I even offered him a deposit last Sunday, prior to him even reviewing the lease, and he said it was not needed.
But then he says I was trying to change the cost of rent (which is what a lease would determine, and it is his job as a landlord to tell us what the rent will be).
I said we could change the DRAFT LEASE to whatever adjusted rent he wanted. Isn't that a normal procedure in rental negotiation?
He said "no, I'm not going to argue with you" (those of you who know me will find that funny, because do I "argue" with anyone)?

That's it.

No discussion possible. He stated it's "his building and he can do what he wants" and he said it's not going to happen.

I dropped off a proposal to him 3 years ago, and HE called ME back. Why? Because he was being pressured from the city to not have a huge empty building on the main thoroughfare. And talking to us would calm things down.

3 Years of waiting...

I wish he had said that 2 and a half years ago. Then I wouldn't have spent Thousands of dollars on lighting, chairs, and rental on a storage space, all in anticipation of this space becoming our Theater's home.

So he crushed our dreams with no real explanation or discussion.

Again I ask, what kind of person does that?

Everyone who warned us about Andrew Guffey turned out to be correct; unfortunately. But I stupidly had faith.

To quote Richard III: "I am too childish foolish for this world".

So now we are on the hunt for another space for our year-round theater...
Back to the start.

As Amy and I are moving out of the Peekskill area, and relocating to the Finger Lakes area of NY, Forall Theater will no longer be in the Hudson Valley, but we will keep you posted as to if/when we re-open in a new location. Thank you to everyone for your support during the 2 shows we were able to produce prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Best wishes to you all, and please support the arts, now and in the future ❤

Well its now officially closed.
It was a nice little black box theater, for the 2 shows we were able to produce there. Wish we could've done more, but we will see what happens in the future...😥

It's a long article, but worth the read. Nils Swanson

“Theater has four elements: a building, artists, money and an audience... Why don’t we now try to let artists lead?

By the time our theaters reopen, which artists will be left standing? Let us revisit the ancient notion of the acting company.

One year ago we opened our doors on our new Theater in Peekskill, NY...
Now the space sits empty... But not gone! 😉

CALL OUT TO ALL WRITERS/POETS/WORDSMITHS:

Need something to work on? Take your mind off the world and its issues?

FORALL Theater would like to see if anyone would like to submit a 5 to 10-minute play/spoken word/scene/anything to us based around Greek Mythology?

There are only a few restrictions:
1.) Must be original work
2.) Must be for 1-6 performers at MOST (Ensemble may be mostly female so think 4/5 women and 1 to 2 men at most – but I have no objection to women playing men and vice/versa)
3.) Set pieces, props and costumes must be minimal (please don’t write me a piece with a large gilded throne as the central/focal point)
4.) Must be either a retelling or a new perspective on an established Greek myth
Example: Perseus and Medusa from Medusa’s Point of view, The Story of Prometheus as an analogy of the spark of life given to mankind and mankind then giving the spark of life to Artificial Intelligence (AI), or why Hope was trapped inside Pandora’s Jar (Box) which contained all the evils of the world (Is hope evil as well)? Please have fun finding your own ideas 😉

Once our theater is up and running again I want to keep working on our “MYTH/ology” show, but I thought how awesome it would be to recruit the local talent around the area, while they have the potential down time to write?
There are no guarantees or promises that your piece will be used, but if we do like what you submit, we will be in contact with you. If we cannot use it, I will do my best to let you know that as well. Please note that any submitted pieces are being submitted voluntarily, without the promise or potential of payment, but will not be used by or distributed to anyone outside of FORALL Theater without the Authors consent.
ALL SUBMISSIONS ARE TO BE E-MAILED TO: [email protected] – cut off date for submissions is JULY 1, 2020
Thank you all – and again stay safe until we can get back into our theaters 😊 – Nils Swanson
