School starts soon and there's still time for one great day in Canadian!

Pack up the car and head to the Citadelle. Let the kids loose in the gardens, wander through the galleries together, and stop by the gift shop for something to send them back to school with. Kids under 18 are always free, so the only thing you're spending is the morning.

When everyone's ready, walk Main Street and find a table for lunch before heading home. We can't wait to see your kids this school year and we'd love to see them one more time before it starts.

Summer isn't quite over yet, but the Roadshow is already thinking about your kids!

This school year, we're heading back into classrooms across the Panhandle — free to every Region 16 school, made possible entirely through the generosity of donors who believe every child deserves access to art regardless of their zip code.

Research consistently shows that students with access to art education score higher in math and reading, demonstrate stronger critical thinking, and are more likely to stay engaged in school. Early exposure to creativity builds problem-solving skills that follow children into every subject and every stage of life. It matters, and it starts young.

Two hundred and fifty years of this country lives in the small but important details — a folded flag, a handwritten letter, a photograph of someone who didn't come home the same person who left.

American Patriots & American Future is on view now at The Citadelle through August, asking you to slow down and look closely at what it actually took to build this nation and who is carrying it forward. In 1910, this building was a church. By 1977, most people assumed it would be torn down.

Malouf and Therese Abraham saw something else entirely.

With no outside architect and no interior designer, they transformed 8,000 square feet of worn pews and dusty columns into the home of their dreams. The stained glass, the brickwork, and the soaring columns stayed, and everything that needed reimagining was given the same careful eye they brought to every painting they ever acquired.

They lived there for thirty years surrounded by one of the most significant private art collections in the American Southwest, then in 2008 they gave it all away — the mansion, the gardens, and every work of art inside — so that anyone who wanted to could walk through those rooms and experience what they had spent a lifetime building.

That decision is why The Citadelle exists today. Hundreds of works of American and European art, nearly 250 antiques, and exhibitions that bring serious contemporary work to the Texas Panhandle, all housed inside a building that was nearly lost and is now anything but.

The Chelsie Nicole Murfee portrait drawing workshop wrapped up last month and those four days were everything we hoped they'd be. Artists from across the region settled into the gallery surrounded by the works of Human Resonance and spent four focused mornings learning from one of the most technically accomplished portrait artists working today.

To everyone who joined us — thank you for showing up with your pencils, your patience, and your willingness to look closely. We'd love to see what you walked away with. Drop your completed work in the comments.

Fourth of July may be over, but we're still celebrating 250 years of this country and everything it took to build it.

American Patriots & American Future: The Sacrifice of Our Nation and the Hope of Our Young Dreamers is open through August at The Citadelle.

Flags, photographs, letters, medals, uniforms, and artifacts that tell the story of the men and women who served alongside the work of young artists who carry that legacy forward. Local history, Panhandle history, American history — all of it worth a closer look.
