Last year I made a reel and planned on sharing so much about the upcoming bee season with all my followers. The year was full of changes and growth, but I still didn't feel inspired again to create any art or share content.

I worked on the native plant garden,
I kept bees,
I wrangled two toddlers while settling into our new home.
Then I reconnected with an old biology teacher from high school. She introduced me to another 'newer' beekeeper.. and I made a friend.

I've always been inspired by nature and the world of bees, but being around another mom juggle and do all the things has been the breath of fresh air that I didn't know I needed.

Here's to a year of creating and finding myself again after living in survival mode. 🫢🐝

My first year of beekeeping is coming to an end. Balancing my time between the twins and the bees has been incredibly difficult lately and my two hives have suffered. I've been told that things in the hive can change quickly. Queen Flora's hive appeared to be doing very well mid summer. Now, I've gone too long without checking on her and they might not make it.

I'm grateful for the beekeeping club that I've joined. Their suggestions, support, and knowledge has kept me going. I've been told to take my losses in the fall, but I'm not ready to give up just yet.

My latest work: Honeybee on Purple coneflower taken in front of my New England Asters.

I've slowly made progress on the next native bee. My energy comes in waves these days, so I'm happy with any progress at all.

Hopefully the next phase of paint will help this solitary male be more easily identified.

At almost 32 weeks with twins, I've been struggling to do much of anything lately. We've had some warmer days recently and yesterday I felt a bit of inspiration and a renewal of energy. I've started on the next native bee. It's a solitary male that I encountered last summer in the vegetable garden. Any guesses on the species without completion and color?

As the snow falls to the ground, I'm already thinking about springtime and the expansion of our native plant garden. I see winter as a time to plan and prepare for the upcoming season. Last year I took note of what bees we saw visiting each plant species. I know what I want to add more of and what I might need to relocate. I didn't accomplish as much as I had hoped to last year, but it was a great start. Something to build on. As my little planning notebook starts to fill up, so does my heart.

Time in the garden is time well spent.
He's to creating and growing in 2022.❀️🐝🌱

It might almost be midnight, but I finished it! πŸ™Œ

This piece has been an idea in my head for over a month now. To see it completed makes my heart happy. This is me and my son in a happy place. We are learning and growing together in so many ways.

When you know better, you do better. 🐝 🏡️

| Day 11 of |

The next time you see a small hole in a dead tree, look closer. This opening may be a secret nest of a Mason bee. Every female is fertile and will build her own nest. Mason bees construct their nests using mud and other available substances, hence the name.

There are many Mason bee species throughout the world. This one is a Red Mason Bee and is native to the UK. It's known for the reddish color hairs on the abdomen. I read that this bee does not carry pollen on it's legs like most bees, but collects pollen on the underside of it's abdomen. There is so much to learn about bees. πŸ“šπŸ˜―

This prompt was a little tough to make bee related, but I love a challenge. ❀️

I thought I would showcase a native bee for this prompt, Agapostemon. Also known as the metallic green sweat bee. πŸ’š This classification of bee does not make honey. There are many subspecies throughout North and South America. This bee is a female and is identified by the white bands on the abdomen. They carry pollen on the tiny hairs found on their hind legs shown in this piece.

They are attracted to the sweat of humans. So don't be afraid if one of these little bees lands on you this summer.

I thought I would showcase my rainbow with some Michigan native wildflowers.
Can you name them all?

What is your favorite wildflower?

|Day 5 of |

This prompt was difficult for me. Symmetrical concepts, perfect shapes, mirroring, etc. are not my normal artistic style. I pondered on this prompt for a while and finally was inspired by a picture of a wasp drinking that my Aunt recently shared. Nature inspires.

Spring is here and I can't wait for the bees.
This piece seems to match the mood outside perfectly. Do you agree? 🐝
