The Arts Center is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that is funded in part by the Frederick S. Upton Foundation and the South Carolina Arts Commission, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional funding provided by the City of Camden, Kershaw County, and BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina along with donations from businesses and individuals. Founded in 1974 by th

ree independent groups (Camden Art Association, Camden Music Association, and the Camden Community Theatre), the Arts Center was intended to be the cultural focus of the county and to serve as the local arts agency and an umbrella organization for affiliate clubs. At the time, 5.19 acres of land and a historic home were donated to the cause and $80,000 was raised to restore and renovate that facility to serve as the headquarters for the Arts Center. In 1982-83, a $600,000.00 capital campaign was conducted and an additional facility including a theatre, dressing rooms, a gallery and office space was constructed on the site. In 1993, a capital campaign raised the endowment of the Arts Center from $500,000 to one million dollars. In 1997, funds were raised to renovate the auditorium, implement significant sound enhancements, upgrade and computerize the theatre lighting system and upgrade the computer and communications systems at the Arts Center. In 1983, when the new building was constructed, the staff increased to two. Today, there is three full-time staff, along with three part-time as well as several contracted staff during the year. Artists and teachers number 20-30 at any given time. Volunteers number in the hundreds. The Arts Center enjoys a close working relationship with the Kershaw County schools in fostering arts education throughout the county.

🎨Artist Whitney LeJeune works to satisfy viewers on an emotional and an intellectual level - mating form, color and the power of suggestion in every effort. “My work as a female painter is bringing passionate art into peoples' lives. I’m pleased when I’ve captured the easily overlooked moments and emotions in life, and said a lot with just a few strokes of paint”.

She is a full-time, painter of the Carolinas currently residing and working out of her studio in Charleston, SC. Her style is influenced by her early childhood home, Austin, Texas, the southern elegance she finds in her family’s South Carolina roots, and her inescapable feminine perspective on the world.

Join us Friday, September 4th (6:00 - 8:00 PM) for the opening of FRUIT OF THE VINE: The Paintings of Whitney LeJeune. Experience her unique vision at this FREE event in the Bassett Gallery.

✨ Calling all artists, makers & creatives! ✨

Our Annual Holiday Market is returning to the Arts Center of Kershaw County, and we’re looking for talented local and regional artists to join us! 🎄🎁

From December 4–13, the Bassett Gallery will be transformed into a festive marketplace featuring unique, handmade works perfect for holiday gifting.

The best part? You don’t have to be here the whole time! Our Arts Center staff will handle sales throughout the market. We simply ask participating artists to:
🎨 Keep your inventory replenished as items sell
🎄 Volunteer for one day during the market
🎁 Bring your creativity and help us make this year’s Holiday Market special!

Whether you create paintings, pottery, jewelry, textiles, woodworking, photography, handmade goods, or something entirely your own—we’d love to hear from you.

This show is coming to us by way of the private collection of LeJeune's work that was commissioned for the labels of INNATE WINES (https://www.innatewines.com/) releases. LeJeune will join us for a night of art, fun, and frivolity.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST AND SHOW: While the female form is Whitney’s primary subject, crafted to convey a mood or experience with color, form and composition, this collection is unique in that each canvas and figure is inspired by the tasting of a unique-soon to be bottled wine. . . Flavor, aroma, story of the grape, vineyard location, stories from the winemaker about making that particular wine. They each embody and capture the character of a distinct wine and the winemaker’s effort. Whitney majored in Painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design earning her BFA in 2009. Whitney currently paints and lives in Charleston, SC with her husband and two young daughters.
