In the May 13, 1944, edition of Eleanor Roosevelt's nationally syndicated newspaper column, My Day, Eleanor responded to a letter she had received from a woman opposed to desegregation. She dismissed the woman's stated concerns and advocated for civil rights. Eleanor wrote that there are "...four basic rights which I believe every citizen in a democracy must enjoy. These are the right to equal education, the right to work for equal pay according to ability, the right to justice under the law, the right to participate in the making of the laws by use of the ballot."

In the first year of the New Deal, Eleanor Roosevelt traveled 40,000 miles to meet the people it was meant to help as well as those who were initially excluded from its aid and tirelessly advocated for their equal rights. Between 1935 and 1940, she traveled to over 150 cities and spoke publicly on the experiences and needs of communities and people regardless of race, gender, or religion.

On March 6, 1933, Eleanor Roosevelt held her first press conference in the Red Room of the East Wing of the White House. At Eleanor's request, all 35 press members in attendance were women. She told the reporters that they would be, “interpreters to the women of the country as to what goes on politically in the legislative national life, and also what the social and personal life is at the White House.” She was the first First Lady to hold a press conference and would go on to hold 348 over the next twelve years.
