We sustain artists, audiences, and community through programs that connect movement and ideas. The Dance Complex is a 25+ year old central hub of dance- locally, regionally, and nationally. Our building, an 1884 circa Odd Fellow’s Hall in the heart of Central Square, Cambridge, is home to a crossroads of diverse movers and dancers. We enable the creation, study, and performance of dance; We sustai

n artists, audiences, and the community through programs that connect movement and ideas; We celebrate the wonder and curiosity of dance for all. The Dance Complex is a unique arts center where professional, pre-professional, and recreational movers can find a variety of movement and dance classes, can access affordable studio space, and participate in programs to help strengthen their choreographic, performance, and production skills. We invite the community to join us for over 100 concerts a year in our theatre and studios. Those who dance, teach and create within our studios receive valued space in a supportive environment for affordable rental rates. Founded by members of the local dance community, The Dance Complex is sustained by a staff of artist/administrators, resident companies and artists, renowned teaching artists, a working board of directors and a corps of volunteer Work Study Program participants.

Did you know that cultural participation improves mental well-being? The Dance Complex is a proud partner with both SocialRx and the Card to Culture program to keep the arts accessible.

SocialRx is an organization that connects healthcare providers with community resources that support health and well-being beyond traditional medical care. Individuals may be referred to dance classes, performances, and community events at The Dance Complex as part of a holistic approach to wellness. Whether it's moving your body, reducing stress, building confidence, or connecting with others, dance can play an important role in overall health.

The Card to Culture program is a collaboration between Mass Cultural Council and the Department of Transitional Assistance, the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Nutrition Program, and the Massachusetts Health Connector to make cultural participation more accessible for all Massachusetts residents.

We're honored to be part of these networks that recognize the arts as an essential part of a healthy, connected community.

Wendy Jehlen/ANIKAYA is bringing Sacred Spaces - Expanded, a site specific performance workshop, to The Dance Complex August 17-22!

In this multigenerational workshop, participants will engage with the many facets of creating performance for public space. Each day will be divided into time working both in studio and on site at various locations in Cambridge, and by the end of the workshop, participants will create, perform and document their own collaborative works.

The “core” group will work throughout the week, experimenting with movement and bringing these smaller moments into the collection of dances to be shared on the final day. On Saturday, we will have an open workshop toward the creation of one larger group piece. While attending the full week may provide a deeper engagement with the process, it is possible to attend Saturday only.

Payment is on a sliding scale, with options from free to $125. While no payment is required, we appreciate your contributions towards offsetting the costs of this program!

For decades, The Dance Complex has been more than a place to dance. It has been a home for movement, culture, and connection.

From the rhythms you hear through the windows on Mass Ave to the global traditions practiced inside, spaces like this are part of what makes Central Square unlike anywhere else.

We sat down with Peter to talk about why creating space for artists and cultures to thrive matters, and how The Dance Complex continues to help make Central Square a true global village.

The doors are open. The cultures are alive. The World Lives Here. Peter DiMuro
