For Silvia Cruz, food is about much more than what’s on the plate. Growing up working alongside her parents, who were migrant farmworkers on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, Silvia learned firsthand how food can bring people together.

Now, Silvia and her husband run El Gallo, a farm-to-table Mexican cafe. You may have seen her in the HOMEGROWN Skills Tent at Farm Aid 2026!

Michael Carter Jr. is the fifth generation to steward his family land in Unionville, Virginia.

But a proposed transmission line tied to the region’s growing data center industry threatens the future of his farm, and farms across the region from West Virginia to Maryland. Michael is working to make sure his family’s land, history and agricultural legacy aren’t lost forever.
