Bluegrass Tuesdays jams will not be meeting tomorrow (Tuesday, December 9th) at The Smoot Standard (or Naco Taco). Both restaurants are booked with another group, so they're unable to accommodate our jams this week. But, we'll be back jamming in Central Square in Cambridge next Tuesday (Dec. 16). Please let your picking buddies know so that nobody shows up by accident, thanks!

Bluegrass Tuesdays jams continue at The Smoot Standard and the patio at Naco Taco in Central Square in Cambridge, but we are shifting the start times forward by a half-hour. Bluegrass Tuesdays regularly scheduled jams will now be meeting on the following schedule:

6:15 pm – Beg-to-Int Bluegrass Jam (email [email protected] to join)
7:30 pm – Kelley's Intermediate Bluegrass Jam
7:45 pm – Ed's Slow-to-Medium Instrumental Jam
8:00 pm – Wayne's Intermediate-to-Advanced Bluegrass Jam

Thanks to Chris Parsons (chef/owner of Lily RIP's), our jams now meet every Tuesday at these two restaurants (rain or shine). Naco Taco is owned by the same folks as Smoots and is another sister restaurant of Lily P's. The Smoot Standard is located at 313 Mass. Ave. in Cambridge, MA 02139, while Naco Taco is at 297 Mass. Ave. Smoot's kitchen will be open until 9 pm, and drinks will be available late from JamBassador Jack.

Food and drinks are available at both locations, but I cannot stress this highly enough: DO NOT carry alcohol between the two restaurants. You can purchase alcoholic drinks at either location, but you must finish your drinks there - you CANNOT carry them down the sidewalk between the restaurants. I'm asking everyone to please remind each other of this very important rule - thanks!

As a reminder, we are still looking for the next home for Bluegrass Tuesdays, and we need your help! Please visit www.BluegrassTuesdays.com for a complete description of the kinds of places we're looking for. Suggestions have been coming in, but we still need more, thanks!

Old-Time Almost Fridays jams continue tonight (Thursday, July 17th) starting at 7 pm (please note the earlier start time), at the Russell Field Playground near Alewife in N. Cambridge. It’s less than a quarter-mile from the end of Route 2, has ample parking, and is less than a five-minute walk from the Alewife T Station. See below for additional details about jamming at the Russell Field Playground.

About jamming at the Russell Field Playground:

(1) There are two parking lots on Rindge Ave. on either side of the little league park (Comeau Field): the lot with the cul-de-sac (to the west of the field) is usually full, but there's tons of space in the lot to the east of the ballpark, which is the lot for the Francis J. McCrehan Swimming Pool at 359 Rindge Ave., in Cambridge, MA 02140 (please note this is not the same location as Russell Field, which is the football field next-door).

(2) We often jam near the sprinkler spot (a.k.a. splash pad) near the yellow canopy, which is between the pool, the playground, and the ball field.

(3) There are working port-a-johns right there, so everyone can have that true "festival experience".

(4) Please bring a folding chair (preferably without arms).

(5) It's not as well lit as some people might like, so if you have a small camping lantern, you might want to bring one.

(6) Mosquitos were mostly not an issue, but you still might want to bring bug spray or wear heavier clothes, as long as it's not too hot.

(7) If the weather looks really bad, we'll cancel the jams. But please don't let some light rain or a short summer thunderstorm keep you away! I'll have my pop-up canopies, and anyone else who has an extra E-Z UP is invited to bring theirs as well.

We had a great time jamming on Tuesday at one of Lily P's sister restaurants, The Smoot Standard in Central Square in Cambridge. And thanks to Chris Parsons (chef/owner of Lily R.I.P's), we are expanding our Bluegrass Tuesdays jams to include both The Smoot Standard and the patio at Naco Taco two doors down. Naco Taco is owned by the same folks as Smoots and is another sister restaurant of Lily P's.

The very generous folks at Naco Taco are going to set aside part of their patio for us to jam every Tuesday night. That is in addition to the multiple jam locations also available to us at Smoots. That means that when the weather is nice, we'll be able to jam at both restaurants, and when it's raining, we can pile inside Smoots like we did this week.

Food and drinks will be available at both locations, but I cannot stress this highly enough: DO NOT carry alcohol between the two restaurants. You can purchase alcoholic drinks at either location, but you must finish your drinks there - you CANNOT carry them down the sidewalk between the restaurants. I'm asking everyone to please remind each other of this very important rule - thanks!

The Smoot Standard is located at 313 Mass. Ave. in Cambridge, MA 02139, while Naco Taco is at 297 Mass. Ave. Smoot's kitchen will be open until 9 pm, and drinks will again be available late from JamBassador Jack. One of the closest parking lots is named Lot 6 and it's located on Bishop Allen Drive between Douglass St. and Columbia St.

Important update: Bluegrass Tuesdays jams this Tuesday, July 8th are moving to The Smoot Standard in Central Square in Cambridge!

Because of the rain forecast for tomorrow, Chris Parsons (chef/owner of Lily R.I.P's) has graciously invited us to move our jams to Lily P's sister restaurant, The Smoot Standard. The Smoot Standard has multiple jam locations, and is located at 313 Mass. Ave. in Cambridge, MA 02139. The kitchen will be open until 9 pm, and drinks will be available late from JamBassador Jack!

Important update: the old-time jams will now be starting at 7 pm on Thursdays!

This Tuesday we had a rain out, but we still had a bunch of folks show up. I'm sorry about that, but when I looked at my weather app earlier in the day, it looked like it wasn't going to be that bad. I'll try to get a more accurate prediction next time, and update everyone through this email if we're cancelling. Today's weather looks a little iffy, but not too bad, so I'd definitely recommend going if you can make it!

As a reminder, we are still looking for the next home for Bluegrass Tuesdays, and we need your help! Please visit www.BluegrassTuesdays.com for a complete description of the kinds of places we're looking for. Suggestions have been coming in, but we still need more!

Both the bluegrass and old-time jams will be continuing on Tuesdays and Thursdays respectively, unless the weather looks really bad. A couple of days ago, we had our first bluegrass jam night at the Russell Field Playground, and it was a huge success! Despite some light and brief rain, we had four simultaneous jams for most of the night with about 25-30 jammers and listeners in attendance. Both the bluegrass and old-time jams will be continuing on Tuesdays and Thursdays respectively, unless the weather looks really bad.

Although it looks increasingly likely that it will rain this afternoon, it actually looks less likely that it will still be raining this evening. I will be bringing multiple pop-up canopies (a.k.a. E-Z UPs), so we should have a good bit of protection if it does rain. Anyone else who has an extra E-Z UP is invited to bring theirs as well. So despite the threat of rain, I hope you can still join us for the jams tonight at the Russell Field Playground near Alewife in N. Cambridge!

Wow, what an amazing outpouring of support and good vibes this past Tuesday as we celebrated our final night at Lily P's! I don't know how late everyone stayed, but I've got photographic evidence that Jambassador Jack made it all the way past sunrise!

7:30 pm Beg/Int Old-Time Jam: hosted by Hannah Rose Baker

As we announced last Friday, tomorrow night (Tuesday, June 10th) will be our final night at Lily P's! I hope you'll join us to celebrate this beautiful chapter and everything we’ve built together as a community. We'll have an Open Stage all night, so bring a song, a story, or just yourself!

Our search for our next home for Bluegrass Tuesdays has already begun, and we need your help! Please visit www.BluegrassTuesdays.com for a complete description of the kinds of places we're looking for.

Tomorrow night's schedule is still a bit up in the air, but we will be having our four regularly scheduled jams (more details online at www.bluegrasstuesdays.com/jams):

5:15 pm – Beg-to-Int Bluegrass Jam (email [email protected] to join)
6:30 pm – Kelley's Intermediate Bluegrass Jam
6:45 pm – Slow-to-Medium Instrumental Jam hosted by Mark
7:00 pm – Wayne's Intermediate-to-Advanced Bluegrass Jam

And then starting next Tuesday, June 17th, we’ll resume our weekly outdoor jams at the Russell Field Playground near Alewife in N. Cambridge. After nearly three unforgettable years, Bluegrass Tuesdays have grown beyond anything I could’ve imagined – thanks in large part to our incredible home at Lily P’s. Sadly, Lily P’s will be going on hiatus in the middle of next week, so please join us this Tuesday, June 10th, for our final night in this amazing space!

We’ll celebrate chef/owner Chris Parsons for his incredible generosity, the wonderful staff, and everything we’ve built together as a community. The originally scheduled bands have kindly stepped aside so we can have an Open Stage all night. Whether you bring a song, a story, or just yourself, I hope you'll join us in honoring this beautiful chapter.

While this goodbye will be heartbreaking for so many people (and I’m right there with you), I’m feeling deeply optimistic. The Bluegrass Tuesdays community is stronger than ever in its 30+ year history, and Lily P’s played a huge part in that. As we turn the page, I’m asking for your help with two things:

(1) Keep the music going – starting Tuesday, June 17th!

We’ll resume our weekly outdoor jams at the Russell Field Playground near Alewife in N. Cambridge. It’s less than a quarter-mile from the end of Route 2, has ample parking, and is less than a five-minute walk from the Alewife T Station. We’re also hoping to move Old-Time Almost Fridays jams there on Thursday nights too, so stay tuned for more details soon!

(2) Please help us find our next home for Bluegrass Tuesdays!

Lily P’s will be a tough act to follow, so I’m asking everyone to help join in the search. Please keep an open mind – it doesn't have to be a bar or restaurant, nor does it have to be in Cambridge or even within 128. It could be a church or community center, or maybe a school or hotel (with or without a bar/restaurant). Our top two criteria are:

1. We’re looking for at least five separate indoor jamming areas available year-round (this is our absolute top priority, and more would be even better)

2. And it must have some amount of parking nearby (so not in Harvard Square, the Theater District, Newbury Street, etc.)

If we can meet those two criteria, the next two most important are:

3. Ideally, we’d love to present a show each week (but it's not as important as our top two criteria)

4. It would be great if it were available every Tuesday night (but it's not a deal breaker)

And our final two most important criteria are:

5. Having food and/or drinks available would be a bonus

6. Subway access would also be a plus

If you can think of a potential venue, please let me know! No need to reach out to them yourself – in fact, it’s probably better if I do. But the more ideas we gather, the better our chances.

One more thing: I could really use some last-minute help next week. I'm looking for a place to store the stage, and somebody with a vehicle big enough to transport it. Even if you can only do one or the other, please let me know!

Finally, I just want to take a moment to thank everyone who has been involved with Lily P's in so many different ways: jammers and jam hosts, performers, audience members, Chris and his family and staff, various kinds of helpers, and on and on. As amazing a space for Bluegrass Tuesdays as Lily P's has been, it was brought to life by all of you. Thank you all so much for helping create such an amazing community!

With deep gratitude,

Tony Watt
