Pacific Coast Highway Near Santa Monica (1930s & After)

During the 1930s, the Pacific Coast Highway offered travelers memorable views of California's coastline, including stretches near Santa Monica. The roadway connected coastal communities and provided access to beaches, seaside attractions, and scenic ocean vistas. Santa Monica Ocean Road (1910 & After)

In 1910, the coastal road through Santa Monica offered travelers a scenic view of Southern California's shoreline during an early period of automobile travel. The ocean, sandy beaches, and open coastal landscape gave the area a very different appearance from the developed beachfront communities seen today. Santa Monica was already attracting visitors who came to enjoy its seaside atmosphere and mild climate. Roads along the coast connected local communities while providing access to popular beach destinations. As automobile ownership increased, coastal routes became increasingly important for recreation and regional travel. Over the years, development transformed much of the surrounding coastline with new roads, homes, businesses, and public attractions. This photograph captures an early glimpse of Santa Monica's coastal landscape before decades of expansion reshaped the area.

Chateau Marmont on Sunset Boulevard (1950 & After)

In 1950, Chateau Marmont stood as one of the most distinctive hotels along Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Inspired by French château architecture, the building featured steep rooflines, elegant details, and a dramatic appearance that set it apart from surrounding properties. Since opening in 1929, the hotel had attracted actors, musicians, filmmakers, and other visitors connected to Hollywood's entertainment industry. Its location above Sunset Boulevard offered guests a sense of privacy while keeping them close to the heart of the city's nightlife. During the mid-twentieth century, the hotel became increasingly associated with Hollywood glamour and celebrity culture.
