In the 1800s, people weren’t just afraid of the dead rising…

They were afraid of the living bringing them back.

Across Europe and parts of America, graves were sealed with iron cages, heavy stones, and protective charms. Families believed witches, occultists, and grave robbers practiced necromancy—summoning spirits or using the dead for dark rituals.

These iron grave cages, called mortsafes, were meant to keep bodies from being stolen… or worse.

But some graves were found disturbed anyway.

And locals whispered that it wasn’t always body snatchers.

Sometimes the dead were needed for something far darker.
