Prints on Paper Studio The studio is owned and operated by Nathanael Kooperkamp and Walker Blackwell. These two artists come from different backgrounds (Photography and Printmaking).

We got to print some awesome massive R a c h e l P o r t e s i images this week. These were huge 40x50” prints on hahnemuhle bamboo. Printing out her beautiful process this large is really special. Both of us always forget how much we love printing out inkjet sometimes. Really beautiful to see these large advanced monochrome prints!

One more full bleed Rachel Cox working with this series was a lot of fun. These prints went through a ton of ink but it was worth it to get the rich black oily ink everywhere. Filling the print drier was great to see the white and black prints next to each other. Thanks for coming out Rachel we can’t wait to see what you do with these prints.

At our studio we do things slightly differently. That includes thin paper chine-collé prep. We apply a special glue to the duralar and then apply the duralar to the gampi over a silicone release board. It has to happen fast or else the glue goes through the gampi print side and micro-pulls the paper when removing the thing from the board. This method is slightly different from the technique we showed in an early post here. That earlier post used a thicker paper. In this case we are glueing 20gsm gampi but we can go all the way down to 7gsm. The gampi dries and is ready to cut to a plate and pull off its backing at time of printing. This makes chine-collé printing easy and precise. Thank you Rachel Cox for filming!

A couple more from our work with Rachel Cox we printed 3 of the series in full black backgrounds and 2 were down with an irregular edge. Creating these shapes that felt just off enough to question the dimension of the print. The lighter images in this series were super powerful filling the space in the opposite way of the full bleed prints. We had never done a border like this so it was an awesome challenge. Thanks for making the trip out tow work with us Rachel we had a blast.

Working with Rachel Cox on this series in gravure. Creating these rich black full bleed prints, Rachel has been documenting these trees down in southern Florida. These palm trees are massive, and her ability to crop in creating these biological moments brings out the humanity in nature. The full series is stunning to see and we can’t wait to show more of this series. See if you can spot the lizard in the first slide.

First dry fit for the top of our new press table. Nathanael Kooperkamp had an afternoon free so he got some woodworking done getting the top sanded and flat. The amount of prep and anticipation we are feeling for the arrival of Claude is intense. Mitchell Press Works has been working like crazy to make all of our dreams come true. Combining the woodworking and metalwork will create a beautiful hybrid that will mimic the photogravure prints made on this press. Making it around the set of flat files will create great storage and triangulation!

A couple more Mike Alexenko and Shelly Beech prints that were quite lovely and unique. We went through the whole stack, and they printed an entire ream of paper in a week. Most prints printed in edition of five with some great experiments. The second slide is a colored gampi with gravure plate on top the first slide is inked with a graphite ink in the center. Really wild prints all week, with a lot of laughs and great times.
