Small Town Snippets....Well OF COURSE I still have my seventh grade Colorado History textbook…new the year we were in seventh grade at Byers, 1960-70, with Mr. West as our teacher. To go back to last week, the Byers school was not torn down because of the flood waters…the water didn’t get there. The old school, opened in 1922, was torn down in 1977 (ish) because the dear old girl was kinda falling apart and we were desperate for more room.
This picture is Stapleton Airport…opened October 17, 1929 as the Denver Municipal Airport, built on 4,700 acres of grazing land seven miles from Denver. In 1944 it was renamed Stapleton Airfield (in honor of Denver Mayor Benjamin Stapleton). By 1959 the airport handled more then ONE MILLION passengers per year! After a 56 million dollar expansion in 1964 (the iconic 12 story control tower, new terminals and runways) it was renamed Stapleton International Airport. Through the 70s and 80s Stapleton was one of the busiest aviation hubs in the U.S. As air travel continued to grow and Stapleton could not provide more runways (the city grew around it), something had to be done. Complaints and lawsuits were regularly being filed concerning airplane noise by the community…on February 27, 1995 the last commercial flight landed at Stapleton (from Dallas/Fort Worth) and the airport closed permanently. All other flights transitioned to the brand new Denver International Airport 19 miles to the north east….WAY OUT IN THE COUNTRY!

Small Town Snippets....What a neat compilation of our local schools, 1958. Keep in mind these schools were for grades 1-12. You’ll recognize the Bennett and Strasburg buildings, as they are still in use. The original brick Deer Trail schoolhouse was built in 1917 with its first graduating class in 1922, and was torn down in 1978 so a new elementary school could be built. The original Byers brick schoolhouse was built in 1922 and was torn down in 1978. It stood in the space between the Lincoln Health building and the old gym. If these dear places of education, sports events, concerts, plays, community gatherings, funerals, (also those first stolen kisses) could talk, oh the things we would learn!!! If you’re old enough, close your eyes and I just bet you can smell the new wax on the wood floors on the first day of school after a LONG summer at home. Remember how the years of built up wax revealed so many colors of everything from dark brown to light yellow? For elementary all we brought with us was a shoe box for crayons, scissors, glue, pencils (provided by the school from the free-foraging paper/supply room). My shoe box was the same one every year, covered in pink flowered wrapping paper. Elementary kids were on the main floor, 7-12 upstairs, and talk about sounding like a herd of elephants overhead when the bell rang…I have to think all our schools provided us with the same kinds of memories. I’d like to hear yours. Twenty-five cents per lunch for a real homemade and deeeelicious feed at noon is my favorite. My second favorite was that all of us were happy to be in school, and happy yo be with each other.

Small Town Snippets…. School is in session once again…the next few weeks will be about our local schools. Here we have a view of the one year old Strasburg school. This picture was taken by L.C. McClure; he spent much of his career photographing Colorado from 1917-1920 and came to Strasburg July 26, 1918 to take many wonderful photos of the growing town. This picture was taken looking from the south (so looking north) up Main Street, from somewhere around the Depot and railroad tracks. The building on the right is the Strasburg Hotel (still there), the building on the left was the general store, and it is now a private residence. Waaaay up north stands the Strasburg school. It was built in 1917 at a cost of about $9,000 bond to School District #31. There was a basement for classrooms, and also in the basement were a cloak room, chemistry lab, furnace room, and even living quarters for the janitor! The main floor kept all the elementary students on the south side in two rooms, and all the high school students on the north side in two rooms. The Community Church and Sunday School used the school building too, as did various social gatherings. Coleman gasoline lamps lit the inside. Basketball games were played on the north side so the lamps were placed high in the corners with protective screens over them. There was a big bell in the belfry, used to call students to class…it can be seen at the Comanche Crossing Museum in Strasburg. There was a barn behind the school (to the north), and outhouses were here as well.
In your spare time go by the railroad tracks and look up Main Street….the scenery has sure changed, but the school (not original) is in the same place.
