I couldn’t be more thrilled to share that Annie Hejny has joined the Soapbox fam! I met Annie in Miami last year and felt an immediate connection and sense of value-alignment not just with her work (which is spectacular, see above), but also her community-mindedness, enthusiasm for collaboration, and with her grounded perspectives on the Wild West that is the contemporary art world.

A few months ago, Annie made the trip to Burlington to gather both inspiration and physical materials to create this new collection of mixed media paintings now at the gallery. In her words:

“Lake Champlain didn’t just inspire this new series—it’s physically woven into it.

To launch my first series with Soapbox Arts, I scouted the Burlington waterfront from Oakledge to North Beach, gathering lake water and sediment samples to fuse directly into these site-specific paintings. These sculptural evocations of light, movement, and the shifting energy of the lake capture everything from calm morning ripples to dark waves of an approaching storm to an unforgettable sunset. They are an invitation to reflect on presence, stewardship, and our visceral connection to the water that sustains us.”

After over seven years of cycling shows on a six week schedule throughout most of the year, we’re doing things a little differently this summer! Until our solo show with opens August 22nd, you’ll find a rotating presentation of works by Soapbox artists on the walls!

Honestly y’all, it’s been SO much fun to take a little curatorial space to be playful and to have an opportunity to share new original works that aren’t specifically part of an exhibition (hint hint like these new works on paper by that pair more exquisitely than I could’ve ever imagined with ’s pieces from her last solo show). Here’s your reminder that you don’t have to wait for someone else’s permission to switch things up… especially when you happen to be your own boss 😂

“Evolution doesn’t have a punchline, unless you count the platypus. Though Charles Darwin first proposed the idea of natural selection more than 150 years ago, that process is so arbitrary and usually relies on such incomprehensibly long spans of time that it’s still a hard concept to grasp. It’s not exactly that the “fittest” or best creatures always end up on top. Instead, Darwin posited, variation of all sorts is constantly happening; we’re descendants of the weird mutants who stuck around.

Jennifer McCandless reminds us of this by presenting an ecosystem of misfit creatures — funny, tragic, baffling and wholly human — in 𝙔𝙤𝙪’𝙧𝙚 𝘼𝙣 𝘼𝙣𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙡, a solo show of ceramic sculptures on view at Soapbox Arts in Burlington.

To be clear, McCandless’ figures are not all the same species; there are aliens and monsters, wildlife, middle-aged women, and even politicians. But all occupy their own niches with a comedic level of specificity that’s deeply humanizing, even when the scene is surreal.”
