Drum day means using all 16 inputs. Aside from the usual spot mics on every shell, I've added a few other aux mics to give the kit some flavor. We've got a mic behind the kit on a shelf that I'm hitting with some compression (just a cheap GT-55 condenser placed on a piece of treatment). I also put a beta 52a inside of a drawer in the live room, kind of reminiscent of a lofi salt shaker mic with distortion, pretty cool. lastly we've got a shotgun mic out in the hallway for some serious hall ambience, really loving that mic. However my favorite move is running the shell mics out of a cue mix and into a Kemper rack unit. Something about drums through a guitar amp is just hard to beat.
what's your favorite way to affect drums?

guitar tracking involved several warble/glitch/harmonized pedals. we ran jules’ tele and pedal board into a jc120 miked with a 414, then lightly used a UAD distressor into a studer a800. a new addition to the input chain was employing a dedicated “strings” mic pictured here. i hit a 57 hard with compression (slow attack/fast release) and blended it into the amp signal to taste. it was cool having essentially an attack fader. the extra thunkiness in the guitar tone works really well with this band’s sound.
also this band is dope and i can’t wait for everyone to hear this full length

today's drum setup needed to be tight. the track was a slow acoustic ballad in the style of Wilco. we brought in all of the rolling traps in nice and close and deadened the kit with snareweights. couldn't be happier with the drum sounds. keeping room mics on the other side of the traps gets the best of both worlds. the close mics can stay focused and the room mics can be mixed in to taste.
(that overhead mic got moved post-tracking sorry)

one of my favorite mics in the arsenal, the Altec 633A. it has this self-spanking ability that sounds great on drums. my usual move is to place it underneath the ride cymbal and have it pointing towards a central location that captures all of the drum shells at once. it usually gives me the presence boost i’m looking for, keeps the drum mix more focused / in your face.
whats the coolest auxiliary mic/purpose you’ve done when tracking drums? ever tried running the shells through a distorted amp? triggering room mics to open when the snare hits? give me your weirdest please.
how far would you go for the perfect drum sound? would you ruin your life?
