Halloween Town comes to life as we bring Danny Elfman’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Suite to the Flynn stage as part of our October 31 program, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Elfman not only lent his voice to the character of Jack Skellington, but also composed the soundtrack to the film (along with the scores for nearly 20 other Tim Burton movies). The spooky, iconic Suite will transport you right into the world of Jack, Sally, and Oogie Boogie, and is a perfect fit for our Halloween matinee.

Celebrate Halloween with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and a spine-tingling matinee! Tomorrow night’s concert, Charity, Sylvia & Cleopatra, is focused on influential women throughout history, but when it comes to powerful women, you don’t have to look any further than our own stage. From our office staff to our volunteers to our musicians, women are holding it down at the VSO - and we celebrate them every day.

Rimsky-Korsakov composed his monumental and enduring Scheherazade based on The One Thousand and One Nights, an Arabic collection of fairy tales. Love stories, festivals, and epic ocean adventures are represented throughout the symphony’s four movements, and our Music Director Andrew Crust previews a bit of what you can expect on September 18 as we bring this thrilling favorite to the Flynn stage.

Our Artistic Advisor & Project Conductor Matt LaRocca joins Music Director Andrew Crust at the Venetian Soda Lounge to chat their way through the program of our season opener, Charity, Sylvia & Cleopatra. Andrew and Matt will play excerpts of the music, answer your questions, and provide context behind the compositions, all in a relaxed and casual atmosphere.

Our season opener at The Flynn kicks off with a piece by legendary artist Björk.

In 2000, the Icelandic multi-hyphenate starred in Lars von Trier’s “Dancer in the Dark” as Selma, an immigrant mother fighting to provide a better life for her son while finding salvation in her love of classic musicals. Much of the film’s soundtrack was written and performed by Björk, and its Overture (a haunting, evocative piece brought brilliantly to life by our brass section) opens our September 18 concert.

Our Music Director Andrew Crust provides some background on our upcoming world premiere, Clarice Assad’s Summerland. lnspired by the true story of an openly Le***an couple in 19th century Vermont, Assad’s latest work is a commission by the VSO and Vermont Humanities, and makes its debut on Friday, September 18. Singers Nikola Printz and Danielle Buonaiuto help bring this celebratory piece to life at our season opener at The Flynn, and we don’t want you to miss it!
