Was The Pawn the best text adventure ever made?

I picked this up at Vintage Computer Festival and honestly had no idea what to expect. It’s a pure old-school text adventure with illustrated scenes, running from the original floppy on a real Commodore 64.

No action. No soundtrack. Just typing, reading, and imagination.

If you played text adventures back in the day, what was better than The Pawn?

Real Hardware. Real Memories.

Donkey Kong on ColecoVision was a HUGE step up from the Atari 2600 version.

The first time I saw this running back in the day, it felt so much closer to the arcade. Better graphics, more recognizable stages, and just a completely different experience at home.

So now I want to know:

What was YOUR Donkey Kong?

ColecoVision?
Atari 2600?
Commodore 64?
Arcade?
Something else?

Lemmings on a real Amiga. 🐭

Pulled out the box, loaded it up on the original hardware, and played through the first few levels.

This game still has such a great look and feel all these years later.

What system did YOU play Lemmings on?

Before Steam, this is how we played Half-Life. 💿

Installing it from the original CD, waiting through the setup, then finally seeing that game come to life on a PC… it just hit differently.

What PC were you playing Half-Life on back then?

POV: It’s way past midnight in 1998… and then you hear THIS. 🔊

If you know, you know.

How many hours did you lose to Sierra games back then?

You all told me the ColecoVision version of The Smurfs was better than Atari 2600…

So I had to find out. 😄

Same game. Same era. VERY different result.

ColecoVision or Atari 2600 — which version do you pick?

The only way I could breakdance in the ’80s. 😂

I definitely couldn’t do any of THIS in real life, but give me a Commodore 64 and I was ready to battle.

Who remembers the breakdancing craze of the ’80s?

Really cool to see La Planque Jeux Vidéo share my video this morning! I had such a great time visiting the store while we were in Québec City. Great people, great shop, and definitely worth checking out if you’re ever in the area. Thanks again for having us and for sharing the video! ❤️

Every time I travel somewhere new, hunting down local retro game shops is at the top of the list. While exploring Quebec City, we dropped into La Planque Jeux Vidéo to check out the selection.

Struck out on finding any Commodore 64 disks or cartridges in the wild this time, but walked away with three great pickups: Altered Beast for the Genesis, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on GameCube, and Spy vs. Spy on the NES.

How often do you still find 8-bit computer software when digging through retro shops, or is it almost strictly console games in your area?

You fought through the entire game to rescue the princess… and then THIS happens. 😂

Who remembers learning this lesson the hard way in Karateka?
