DAY 1 — AND THE ADVENTURE BEGINS. 🦁

Imagine arriving in South Africa, walking into a room filled with some of the world’s best West Coast Swing dancers, and realising you’ll be learning from them all week.

That was Day 1 of Safari Swing 2026.

The afternoon was packed with workshops led by Jordan Frisbee, Tatiana Mollmann, Jakub Jakoubek, Emeline Rochefeuille, Robert Royston and Mia Pastor — from Springboks and Gazelles to dedicated styling classes for leaders and followers.

Then came the evening: a South African braai, new friendships, socialising and a party with Pro Show performances that brought the dance floor to life.

And just like that, dancers from around the world were no longer strangers. They were sharing music, laughter and the beginning of an unforgettable adventure.

This was only Day 1.

Now imagine what the rest of the journey holds. 🌿

🦁 A Little Story from Pilanesberg

Once upon a time, in the ancient hills of Pilanesberg, a curious traveller went looking for the wild…

First came a giraffe, with little oxpeckers perched on its head — tiny birds helping keep their giant friend free of ticks. 🦒

Then a colourful monitor lizard appeared, flicking its long, forked tongue as it explored the world around it.

At the water’s edge, a hippo watched quietly, followed by a lion resting in the golden grass. 🦛🦁

Above the trees, a flash of blue revealed a lilac-breasted roller, while a yellow-billed hornbill watched from nearby.

And then came the zebras — each wearing a completely unique pattern, like a fingerprint. 🦓

All of this unfolded in Pilanesberg Game Reserve, a vast wilderness of roughly 55,000 hectares, shaped by an ancient volcanic landscape and home to the Big Five and hundreds of bird species.

Perhaps that’s the magic of a game drive.

You set out looking for the famous animals…

But along the way, the bush introduces you to a whole world of characters you never expected to meet. 🌿

Sometimes, you don’t just learn the history. You feel it.

One of the most powerful moments of Safari Swing 2026 came when Robert Royston stepped into the circle with traditional Zulu dancers.

What began as watching became recognition.
What he understood intellectually, he suddenly felt through movement.

West Coast Swing has deep roots in Black American culture, shaped by generations of African American music, rhythm, movement and expression. Standing in South Africa, Robert experienced that history from a very different perspective — not through words or teaching, but through his own body.

And then the dancers invited him to join them.

What followed was something far greater than a performance. It was an exchange. A moment of respect, joy, vulnerability and human connection across cultures — brought together through the one language we all understand: movement.

Robert described it simply:

“I’ve known the history intellectually for years. That night, I didn’t just know it. I felt it in my body.”

We are incredibly grateful that Safari Swing could create a space where a moment like this could happen.

Some experiences become memories.

WHEN THE WORLD OF WEST COAST SWING COMES TO YOUR DOOR.

On 16 September, Safari Swing hosted an exclusive pop-up workshop at Five6seven8 Dance Studio with Leo Lorenzo, Robert Royston & Mia Pastor.

The day began with a private teachers’ class with Robert & Mia, where we explored the art of teaching itself — rethinking how we understand the body, the mind and the way we help others learn.

Then came the workshops.

With Leo, dancers explored tuck turns, freespins, elbow catches and advanced variations, with plenty of Leo’s unmistakable styling and musicality.

Robert & Mia took us into their world of styling, including the slingshot, dampening and a cut-off variation.

But perhaps the best part came afterwards.

The workshop flowed straight into the social, giving local dancers the opportunity to dance with our international guests and instructors — putting everything they had learned into connection, music and movement.

This is what community looks like.
Knowledge shared.
Ideas exchanged.
Dancers inspired.
And a local community empowered by the people who came from across the world to share their craft.

A huge thank you to Five6seven8 Dance Studio for welcoming us, to everyone who stepped onto the floor, and of course to Leeloo, the dancing cat, for providing some unexpected entertainment.

This was more than a workshop.

A little glimpse of Safari Swing through Leo Lorenzo’s eyes. 🦁🌿

From getting just metres from an elephant and meeting lions after dark, to bush walks, game drives, drumming and unforgettable moments with friends — this is what happens when West Coast Swing meets the African bush.
