BUFFALO RIVER/OGDEN STREET SPILL UPDATE: Thank you for the ongoing concern and river stewardship from our community! This is what Waterkeeper has learned from local authorities about the incident and investigation:
Neither the source or substance has yet been confirmed, though the product displays sight and odor characteristics consistent with diesel fuel. The remnant material in the water has degraded and spread too thin to be able to conduct reliable analytics. Containment booms have been deployed and are being managed by DEC. It does not appear the sheen has spread beyond Seneca Bluffs downstream, and there may be reports of the sheen visible upstream, closer to the 90. Depending on wind, water levels, flow rates, etc., the Buffalo River can flow in either direction, and can also backflow into sewer and stormwater pipes, which makes it more challenging to confirm the origin of the spill. Site inspections continue throughout the sewer and stormwater system in the area to try to identify potential pathways from wastewater infrastructure.
Nothing has been ruled out yet, ranging from illegal dumping to infiltration into the stormwater system, or contaminated groundwater intrusions associated with area brownfields.
BNW will continue to coordinate with local agencies to find ways we can assist in closer monitoring this stretch of the Buffalo River. We ask that the surrounding community stay vigilant, and if anyone sees a new sheen on the river, please call the NYSDEC spills line 1-800-457-7362 or contact us IMMEDIATELY, as this gives investigators a better chance of tracking down and testing any river contamination as it is happening.
