The Subversive Theatre Collective

The Subversive Theatre Collective Where dissent takes center stage! The vast majority of theatres today are designed to anesthetize. They perform plays that celebrate complacency and complicity.

They provide their patrons with polite diversion, with an excuse to dress up and drink up, they help the privileged classes maintain the illusion that they are "cultured." Unsurprisingly, the Establishment finds oceans of funding for THESE types of theatres. But some of us believe that theatre can serve a higher purpose than simply amusing the affluent elite. Some of us believe it is theatre's dut

y not to lull people to sleep, but to wake them up; not to leave audiences feeling everything is "hunky dory," but to raise awareness, provoke, challenge, empower, incense, inspire, and even agitate! We at Subversive Theatre undertake to build a PEOPLES THEATRE . . . a theatre of aesthetics that is not beholden to corporate paymasters, but exclusively dedicated to the needs, concerns, and aspirations of those who are oppressed, exploited, and dis-enfranchised by the existing social order . . . a theatre that is not just a talkshop for abstract ideas, but a catalyst for action working directly with local, national, and international activist campaigns . . . a theatre that endorses no one political doctrine, but embraces the wide spectrum of the activist movement. The privileged classes are well aware that the pen can be mightier than the sword. For that reason they have flooded the world's stages with THEIR stories and cut the rest of us off from our own. Subversive Theatre commits itself entirely to presenting plays that tell the Peoples' stories -- both the classics of the past as well as the new emerging radical works of the present. In this way, we hope to help keep the august tradition of American protest theatre alive and kicking in the Twenty-First Century.

Chris Standart was a luminous prescence on Subversive Theatre's stage so many times, so many ways! As an actor, as a director, as a friend, and as an adorable pain in the ass -- Chris was unforgettable in every way. So sad to hear of his passing. Good night, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Al Pacino has perfomed in the title role of multiple renditions of THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI. He described it as "more enlightening, more encouraging, more profound than any experience I've had in the theater."
He first took on the role at Boston's Charles Theatre in 1975 with some of his buddies from The Godfather movies playing some of the gangster strongmen -- with a choice cameo by the one and only Tony Randall as the mobster's acting coach!
Pacino revived the role as part of a 2002 production at the National Actor's Theatre with a star-studded cast that featured Paul Giamatti, Steve Buscemi, John Goodman, Chazz Palmenterri, and many others.
Pacino made a special point of revisiting the role once again in 2016 in response to Trump's first bid for president.
Subversive Theatre is proud to present our own one-day-only staged reading of Brecht's THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI this Saturday on No Kings Day 2. Al Pacino won't be there (at least, so far as we know) but we're very excited to present this rare gem of protest theatre with a stellar ensemble of some of Buffalo's finest. Don't miss it!

Meet Bertolt Brecht. The original Antifa playwright. In 1933 this revolutionary author had to flee Germany as the N***s came after him and his wife. He wrote many plays and poems about the dangers of fascism that he knew all too well from his own personal experience. One of his most direct and powerful indictments of fascism is his outrageous farce THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI which he wrote in 1941 just before moving to the U.S. It's a thinly veiled parable set in gangland Chicago... but with all that's been happening in America lately, it might well have been written yesterday. Subversive Theatre is honored to present our own version of THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI on No Kings Day 2, Oct 18th at 4pm at Fitz Books. Come check it out. Brecht power to all!
