Friday (June 14) –

Most of day at gallery – further discussion of pictures. Take also with me “Blackeyed Shed” (bought at auction from Chrysler, and “Scrapped Locomotives” bought back from Sheafer’s.)

Alex Brook & Gould in.

Evening with Frank & Margaretta again. They were in a love making mood, which was distasteful to me & boring. She cooked & served the dinner & it was excellent. Afterwards, as I was about to leave, they quarreled about Margaretta’s dog. Frank had promised the dog to take him for a walk, Margaretta said he didn’t need to go out. So Frank childishly refused to go out without the dog. Disgusted & afraid of missing my train, I went out into the hail. M-trying to get Frank from his chair, tore his sweater to shreds, at which he called her a filthy name. I left them. Later as I was still waiting for a taxi, Frank came out with the dog, but a taxi came up then & I merely waved, jumped in & drove off. I cannot tell which is worse, to see a couple making love, or quarreling.

I lay in my berth a long time sleepless, wondering what would be the outcome of it all. Surely the Gallery cannot go on so.

June 13 - Arrive N.Y. after showing to Commodore for breakfast, call John, he is sure Frank can put me up one night.

To Gallery – show Frank my new work of winter & spring – his enthusiasm for most of them very heartening to me.

Lunch at the Century with Moe, Young & Zigrosser.

Our meeting is not very interesting. Little of real worth, altho we recommended several for fellowships.

With Young to Century afterwards. An “applejack” drink called Stars, which we had also had at lunch.

With F[rank] to Margarettas, with whom he is living. The balance of my visit, unsatisfactory, and sordid. I was filled with disgust over their attitude toward their relation, their excessive drinking and frivolous attitude toward life. I made the mistake of drinking some along with them and as a consequence, the combination of apple-jack, gin & wine upset my stomach and gave me a terrific hangover the next morning.

Roux Soup Bar & Café

In Memory of Chef Tony Vitello

We are heartbroken to share that Chef Tony Vitello has passed on. Chef Tony was a tremendous contributor to the Western New York culinary community and was beloved for his warmth and humor. He played a vital role in creating Roux Café alongside Jay and Amy Davidson, and we know how much he has meant to Chefs Christy and Chris Dembik. He will be greatly missed, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and collaborators at this time.

Please note that in his honor, Roux Café will be closed on Thursday, June 11th so that the team may pay their respects. Roux will also be closed on Saturday, June 13th. Thank you for your understanding and support.

FIT: Buffalo Fashion, Identity, and Transformation
Upcoming
Jul 9, 2026 — Nov 1, 2026

The vibrant energy of the contemporary local fashion scene comes from a multigenerational network of dedicated designers, artists, and cultural innovators who are boldly transforming the city’s creative landscape.

While this fashion renaissance might seem like a recent development driven by underground subcultures gaining prominence, it aligns with a long-standing tradition of artists challenging mainstream limitations and subverting dominant narratives to create more inclusive, accessible, and representative spaces for a diverse majority rather than a select few.

FIT: Buffalo Fashion, Identity, and Transformation explores the creative output of a region where fashion, art, community, and economics are deeply interconnected. The artists featured in the exhibition have documented and responded to Buffalo’s evolution from an industrial center to a forgotten city in decline, and now to a culturally rich community full of potential. Their practices span media, ranging from photography, painting, and mixed media to creative direction, fashion design, and illustration.

Historical works provide context for Buffalo’s industrial roots, characterized by early twentieth-century economic prosperity, material wealth, luxury, and the rise of the cultural and social elite. Contemporary works reshape high-end fashion as both accessible and equitable, while emphasizing sustainability. Upcycled materials are a prevalent trend, as local designers become more mindful of the fashion industry’s environmental and economic impact worldwide.

Consequently, FIT signifies multiple concepts, from the tailored fit of garments to fashion’s function in personal expression and community empowerment. This exhibition, curated by Tiffany Gaines , celebrates how arts and fashion inspire a community dedicated to authentic expression and vitality.

The other day going over my early summer 1915 notes—remembering a note on a moon reflected in Little Beaver below Covered Bridge. I finally found it. It evokedmemories of June twilights and nights along the Little Beaver; and of thick white mists lying low in chilly meadows; of myriad fireflies, and ghostly arrowhead flowers—Today I painted a moonlight fantasy based on these memories, with enormous elm-shaped phantoms rising up toward the moon, white-crowned—a "never-never land" that fills me with happiness.

June 9 – Tues.

P.M. Call (which Bertha took) from? Talking for Life – We are invited to spend a vacation on the North Shore of Jamaica in August all expenses paid – the only stipulation being I paint at least one picture for Life to reproduce.

P.M. – In studio – make large drawing of plan for “In Memoriam – the Chestnut Tree” I think I shall do the painting on a 44 x 54 mounting.

I packed three water-colors + about 5:30 we took it over to the air-port.

After a light supper – to R’s [Richter’s] for Davy’s birthday – [unintelligible name] also there – Poor Martha was miserable with boils on her leg (1) and arm-pit (2) –

Earlier in the day she had told B of a harrowing experience Hank had the day before – he had flown to Detroit as a co-pilot with a man named Schultz – they ran out of gas, had to land in Canada; after refueling, they flew over the border to U.S. without going through customs. They were picked up by the F.B.I. – By coincidence they were after a man named Schultz suspected of smuggling narcotics + “white-slaves”. Hank was questioned for hours before they released him. Schultz had to remain until the next day – Hank got so home sick he decided to come home by bus rather than stay in Detroit over-night on all-night trip.

As we came out to go home, we saw the first narrow crescent of the new moon, directly under a huge planet (Venus?).
