๐ผ๐ ๐กโ๐ ๐น๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ป๐๐ ๐๐ข๐๐๐๐: ๐ฝ๐๐๐๐กโ๐ ๐ฟ๐๐๐๐๐ก is a cinematic variation on Martha Grahamโs Lamentation, unfolding across archival memory, AI-generated imagery, Isadora media programming, and Janet Eilberโs living body.
The work looks beyond the iconic purple fabric to ask what has always existed beneath it: bones, muscles, memory, and the lineage of bodies that have carried the dance through time. Eilber, one of the dancers who helped reconstruct Lamentation with Graham herself, returns to the solo decades later, no longer enclosed by the costume, but revealed through the history held within her body.
Moving between Grahamโs image, Eilberโs younger self, and the woman dancing today, the film becomes a passage through time. Technology does not replace the body; it peels back its layers, allowing the past and present to inhabit the same unfolding gesture.
Xin Ying is a choreographer, interdisciplinary artist, and principal dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Working across dance, AI, immersive media, and digital archives, she explores how choreography can move between bodies, technologies, and generations. Her projects, including ๐๐๐๐กโ๐๐ต๐๐ก, ๐ผ๐ ๐กโ๐ ๐น๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ป๐๐ ๐๐ข๐๐๐๐, and ๐ฟ๐๐๐๐๐ก๐๐ก๐๐๐: ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐กโ๐ ๐ด๐๐โ๐๐ฃ๐, reimagine performance as a living system where movement, memory, and computation intersect. Through volumetric capture, machine learning, interactive installation, and embodied research, she investigates how technology can extend artistic lineage and human connection. She is an MFA graduate of NYU, an Onassis ONX Fellow, and recipient of the Google Artist + Machine Intelligence Faculty Research Award.
