Confusing when you see people post they want to be an actor and they are available to audition, but they have zero or very limited training.
No one posts that they want to be a mechanic and are available to fix your car with no training. Or they want to be a doctor and are available to give medical examinations. Or they want to be an architect and are available to draw drafts for your new home.
But somehow acting is just apparently something you do. Good acting takes work.
Here’s what I found when I googled “the craft of acting”. If you’re serious and want to really become an actor, this is what it entails:
The craft of acting is the learned, technical skill of embodying characters through voice, body, and emotion to tell a story, involving deep human understanding, empathy, and constant practice of specific techniques like script analysis, listening, and physical expression, blending art (creativity) with discipline (craft) to create authentic, resonant performances. It's about building a believable portrayal from the ground up, moving beyond just reciting lines to creating truthful moments.
Key Components of the Craft
Technique & Skill: Learning specific tools like vocal projection, physical movement, script analysis, and developing conditioned habits for responding truthfully.
Empathy & Understanding: Deeply connecting with human behavior, motivations, and emotions to inhabit a character authentically, not just mimic them.
Presence & Reactivity: Staying present in the moment, listening intently, and reacting genuinely to the scene and other actors, allowing truth to emerge.
Transformation: The ability to create a believable inner and outer life for a character, moving from the actor's self into another existence.
Practice & Dedication: A lifelong commitment involving consistent learning, study, and repetition to achieve proficiency, similar to mastering a musical instrument.
