Buffalo Bound Together: a printmaking & collaborative bookmaking workshop

Buffalo is a place we all carry differently. This workshop starts from that idea: that a city, like a conversation, only becomes whole when many people’s views of it come together.

Over three days, participants will each contribute one photograph of Buffalo, the city as they see it, and turn it into a photopolymer printing plate. Working side by side at Mirabo, we’ll expose, develop, and print those plates by hand, then bind the resulting prints into collaborative books, built in the spirit of a correspondence pad: an object made for exchange, where each page holds something personal that becomes part of something shared.

This is both a technical workshop and an exercise in collaboration. You’ll leave knowing how to expose and print a photopolymer plate, register and pull a print, and construct a hand-bound book. You’ll also leave having made something none of you could have made alone: a shared record of Buffalo, seen through multiple perspectives and bound into volumes each participant can take home.

The Details
Seats: limited to 8 participants
Cost is sliding scale: $250-$300, please pay what you’re able

Workshop Schedule:
Three sessions, 2.5 hours each
Day 1: Developing plates and proofing; setting up paper registration for printing
Day 2: Printing, refining, and printing more, cutting backing board for notebooks
Day 3: Assembling books; collation, trimming, gluing, and binding

No prior printmaking experience required. Bring your photograph, and leave with a printed plate, individual prints, and a shared, bound book that belongs to everyone who made it.

Led by Andrea Mancuso, whose studio practice works in alternative photographic processes and place-based fieldwork, including an ongoing body of work called A Correspondent’s Pads, hand-made letterpress notebooks filled with prints and artifacts documenting specific landscapes. We have Rachel Leah Cohn in residence this week and would love to welcome you to the studio to see her work while she’s here!

Rachel is an interdisciplinary artist working across painting, sculpture, video, and performance. She holds an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, and values experimentation, collaboration, and finding new ways to describe the world around her. Recent projects have included an attempt to study the inner life of oysters, building a dream sauna, and reenacting memories for further investigation.

While at Mirabo, Rachel is exploring relief printing techniques including pressure printing and monotype. Come see what she’s up to this Friday from 12-2 PM. The studio will be open to the public, and Rachel welcomes conversations about her work and process.

Install day for the opening THIS FRIDAY! We’ll celebrate Dusty Herbig’s exhibition, Conned, from 6-9pm. Free and open to the public, hope to see you there!

Featuring etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, screenprints, and mixed media works on paper and fabric, Conned explores our reliance on technology and the overwhelming stream of information that surrounds us. Herbig’s layered works use fragmented text to consider what gets lost in the noise - and what we might miss when everything is competing for our attention.

We’ve been keeping a secret.

After months in the studio, we’re excited to finally share our latest collaboration with artist Ali Banisadr: a new etching edition printed at Mirabo Press.

Commissioned by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum and published by Cristea Roberts Gallery, the edition made its public debut in Temple of the Mind, Banisadr’s exhibition at Buffalo AKG Art Museum, co-curated by the artist and Holly E. Hughes.

It was a privilege to work with ALI BANISADR on this project, and we’re honored to see the print included in such a remarkable exhibition. If you’re in Buffalo, don’t miss it.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing behind-the-scenes videos documenting the making of the etching, from the first bite of the plate to the final prints. We hope you’ll follow along for a closer look at the process. Learn more about the collaboration through the link in our bio.

Kitchen Lithography Workshop
Wednesday, June 17th, 2026
6:00-8:30pm

Participants will learn Kitchen Litho, otherwise known as Tin Foil Litho, an alternative lithography process using materials readily found in the kitchen - tin foil, cola, vegetable oil, and a wooden spoon! This approach is great for newcomers to print media and seasoned printers alike. This workshop will share an inexpensive means to make multiples, printable from home, as either complete works or additional elements to other drawings, prints, or collages.

Learn about the playful and immediate process of low relief pressure printing. Using hand-cut paper, tape, and other materials, we will explore collage and stencil work to create lush and atmospheric prints with a graphic base. We’ll be making prints on the etching press but will also include instructions for how to make pressure prints using a rolling pin - no press required!
