LIBERTY OR DEATH: THE ULTIMATE CLAIM TO AUTONOMY 👊

Harriet Tubman once reasoned it plainly: there were only two things she had a right to, liberty or death. If she could not have one, she would have the other. No man would take her alive.

This is KUJICHAGULIA at its most absolute. Tubman didn't wait to be granted freedom. She defined the terms of her own existence and moved on them.

Complete autonomy meant complete ownership, of her body, her choices, her destiny. That declaration turned a passive hope for freedom into an armed, reasoned resolve to fight for it as long as her strength lasted.

Self-Determination isn't a wish. It's a decision.

THE INDIVISIBILITY OF AUTONOMY

In 1971, Fannie Lou Hamer stood before the founding meeting of the National Women's Political Caucus and said something that still cuts straight to the truth: nobody's free until everybody's free.

Hamer wasn't talking about niceness. She was talking about structure. Freedom is a closed loop. If any part of a community is denied the power to define its own future, the systems holding them down threaten everyone's autonomy, not just theirs.

That's KUJICHAGULIA in its fullest form. Self-Determination was never meant to be a finite resource, won by one group at the expense of another. It's an all-or-nothing state. True sovereignty means dismantling every overlapping barrier, race, gender, class, together, not one at a time.

Hamer knew it in 1971. We are still living the truth of it.

That's the heart of KUJICHAGULIA. Self-Determination doesn't start with the future. It starts with knowing where you come from.

Sankofa teaches us to look back so we can move forward. Garvey knew it. Our ancestors knew it. This month, we're claiming it again.

Frederick Douglass was a part of our 50 Faces of Freedom and because yesterday was the 4th of July, we thought we'd bring his words back to the forefront!

KUJICHAGULIA. Self-Determination. 🔆

In 1857, Frederick Douglass reminded us of a truth that still holds today: power concedes nothing without a demand.

Self-Determination has never been passive. It's the work of demanding what is ours, defining our own future, and refusing to wait for permission.

If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Douglass knew it in 1857. We live it every day.

WHAT IS FREEDOM WITHOUT SELF-DETERMINATION?

On June 19, 1865, freedom was declared for the enslaved in Texas, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. But freedom on paper and freedom in practice are two different things.

That's where KUJICHAGULIA comes in. Self-Determination is the bridge between being freed and being free.

It's the choice to define ourselves, instead of being defined.
It's the choice to speak for ourselves, instead of being spoken for.
It's the choice to build our own tables, instead of waiting for a seat at someone else's.

This is what our ancestors understood the moment the news reached Galveston. Freedom wasn't the finish line. It was the starting point.

This July, as we honor Kujichagulia, we honor that same spirit: the ongoing work of claiming our full humanity, on our own terms.

So, it is said that the common myth is that freed those who were enslaved. But historical accounts, including W.E.B. Du Bois' work, reveal that those who were enslaved took matters into their own hands. They fled the South, withdrew their labor, and forced the Union's hand, with many joining the Union Army and Navy.
