You may have noticed our absence 🤍
We’ve been pretty quiet since our birthday in February, not really on purpose. This post is to say a couple of things that feel obvious but probably aren’t, and also to update you on our current concept of the future.
Since spring/summer of 2023, our primary home was the upstairs studio space at The Bird’s Nest. For those who do not know, a freak accident at The Nest in early August 2025 took the life of one of the owners, Ashli Hartmour, and necessitated the closure of the space. Losing that home was/is/has been devastating. So, so many of our friends lost a home of one kind or another there, too, and lost a dear friend, and we have all felt aftershocks as the grief slowly begins to settle.
Losing Ashli is devastating. She welcomed us into her building with open arms and supernatural patience for late rent and an unwavering faith that what we are is important and should exist. She was also an example of how to build the kind of sanctuary we want our class to be, and an excellent advisor on how to keep doing it better. Grappling with the professional loss is almost as weird as grappling with the personal loss.
But/So/And
The Others is a space for grappling. We’ve been quiet, we’ve been sad. But there is room here for sad. What we don’t know right now is where, physically, that room should be. There have been a lot of good options, but none of them fit right, or maybe just not right now. We’re still looking.
Today, we’ll be running our annual workshop with GLYS, dancing with high school students.
In June, our director Charlie Finan and dancer Valerie Lytle will be performing a short duet in masks at Intersect.
We’d love to be considered for Other performance opportunities in later summer.
And starting soon, we will be back to playing outside, at least sometimes, at least for now. We’ll try to aim for once a month if we can, and weekends when possible, at least for now. We’ll announce it here. Free class, no masks, no such thing as a wrong feeling.
Thanks for sticking with us. More soon. We hope this is good information for you to have 🤍
