You are dust
and breath.
Star-dust. Grave-dust.
The ashes and bones
of once-mighty empires,
birth cries and last words
and whispers
and belly laughs
and incoherent howls
inhabit you.

From before ever
until forever.

Creation
and Destruction
are shadows
on childhood's wall.
All that ever will be
always was.
And you are.

The butterfly heart
of the to-be-born
is yours.
The leaden heart
convicted and condemned
proscribed to beat its last
is yours.
The ragged feet
of the dispossessed,
the trembling hands
full of poison
promising furlough
from invisible illness
are yours.

Building hands
and digging hands
and pointing hands
and hands reaching up
and hands reaching out
are yours.

There is no "me,"
there is no "someone else,"
there is only you.

You were.
You are.
What will you be?
