Despite my best intentions of coming to Edinburgh Festival Fringe solely as a spectator and supporter of the arts, Mr. Betsy and I wound up on a few stages thanks to the wonderful Fringe spirit of audience participation. I did not think I could land a plane, but Dan Boerman was convinced that I could and that Mr. Betsy could act as my air traffic controller. We sort of did it…on the second attempt. I love a good bit and adding a flight simulator to a stand up act makes for a great show. Then Mr. Betsy (who really doesn’t aspire to be onstage) wound up in a very unique relationship as an unsuspecting groom in Married at Fringe Sight Married at Fringe Sight! This was one of two shows we saw by the talented David Ian. His other show, Bad Decisions was equally unique and engaging. I love the sense of temporary community his shows create. Only a master of crowd work could make an audience relaxed enough to share the things I heard in these two comedy shows. I’ve seen Sarah Hester Ross perform 4 times in 3 different cities. I’m a sucker for a b***y broad with a powerhouse voice. Her show, Serving Cvnt was SOLD OUT while I was here at Fringe, but I still got to hear her pipes when we did karaoke together at 3am! I didn’t take nearly enough photos of other performers I met and adored, but I have to give props to a few more shows that blew my mind. Couplet : Folk Marry Kill…I’m also a sucker for folk musicians with witty lyrics and a heartwarming comedy show. We adored their performance! TO BE FRANK To Be Frank…Weird is my favorite and this was so absurd and a masterpiece of physical comedy. MONKS Monks….I am still processing how much I loved this show. I’m pretty sure I watched Alex Edelman fix world peace. Someone should tell his dad. Seeing ventriloquist icon Nina Conti was wildly inspirational. And our 19th show of the week was Hole by American Sing-Song It’s genius. That’s all. I’ll be next year, but next time I’ll bring my own show.
