We have some exciting news to share!

Forest Floor Compost has officially started a new contract collecting compost for the City of Gaithersburg.

As a small, local business, this is a pretty big milestone for us. We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to grow what started as a small composting company and to work with a community that values keeping food waste out of the landfill and putting those nutrients back into the soil.

We’ve worked hard to get here, and we’re excited for what this next chapter looks like. We’re proud to be part of Gaithersburg’s composting efforts and to keep doing our part, one bin at a time.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Forest Floor Compost along the way. We couldn’t do this without you.

Here’s to growing something good. 🍎🌱🎃

🌱 WHAT IF WE STOPPED THROWING AWAY THE FUTURE?!

Forest Floor Compost started with a simple idea:

What if the food scraps we throw away every day could become something valuable instead?

Today, we collect food scraps from homes and businesses, keep those resources out of the waste stream, turn them into compost, and put those nutrients back into our community.

But we know we can do so much more.

We've built Forest Floor through farmers markets, word of mouth, community support, and a lot of hard work. Now we're asking our community to help us take the next step.

We're raising funds to help us reach more people, grow our collection service, expand our impact, and build a stronger local system for recovering organic resources.

And here's the important part:

You don't have to donate to help.

Share this post. Tell a friend. Introduce us to a business. Connect us with someone who can help. Become a customer. Or, if you believe in what we're building, consider contributing.

Every bit of support helps.

Because this isn't just about compost.

It's about what kind of community we want to build—and what we choose to do with the valuable things we're currently throwing away.

🌎 Help us build it. One bucket at a time.

🚨 **What can a lettuce outbreak teach the compost industry?**

A lot more than you might think.

Recent food safety investigations involving leafy greens have renewed an important conversation about how untreated wastewater and f***l contamination can introduce dangerous pathogens into our food system. While investigators continue to trace the exact sources in current outbreaks, one thing is clear: **protecting public health begins with properly managing organic waste and keeping contamination out of our water and food supplies.**

At Forest Floor Compost, we spend a lot of time thinking about a simple question:

**What happens to organic waste after we're finished with it?**

That's a much bigger question than compost.

It's about engineering.

It's about agriculture.

It's about public health.

It's about protecting our communities.

🎙️ That's exactly why we're building something new.

A project that's been in the works for months.

A place where we'll have honest conversations about:
🌱 Compost & soil science
⚙️ Environmental engineering
📰 Current environmental issues
💡 New technologies
🌎 The future of waste, food, and sustainability

No lectures.

No politics.

Just good science, good questions, and straight talk.

Because sometimes the most important question isn't **"What's the answer?"**

It's...

**"What are we overlooking?"**

Stay tuned.

Something big is coming.

🍉 The Watermelon: What Happens When It Goes to the Landfill?

Summer and watermelon go hand in hand. But have you ever stopped to think about what happens after the last slice is eaten?

For most families, a surprising amount never gets eaten—the rind, the stems, and sometimes even leftover fruit.

And here's something even more interesting...

A watermelon is about 92% water. 💧

When those heavy, water-rich scraps are buried in a landfill, they don't get the chance to naturally return to the earth. Instead, they're trapped beneath layers of waste in an environment with very little oxygen. There, they break down differently than they would in nature, producing landfill gas instead of healthy soil.

Now imagine a different ending.

➡️ Compost collection
➡️ Nutrient-rich compost
➡️ Healthy soil
➡️ Next year's gardens and farms

That's the beauty of composting. What looks like "waste" is actually a valuable resource waiting for its next chapter.

This summer, enjoy every juicy bite—and let the leftovers help grow something new.

🌱 Forest Floor Compost makes it easy. Just toss your watermelon scraps into your compost bucket, set it curbside on collection day, and we'll take care of the rest.

Because every watermelon deserves a better ending than the landfill.

🇺🇸 **Happy 250th Birthday, America!** 🇺🇸

Today, we celebrate 250 years of independence, innovation, and the enduring spirit of a nation built on the belief that each generation has the opportunity to leave something better for the next.

At Forest Floor Compost, that same spirit inspires the work we do every day.

Every bucket of food scraps collected is transformed into nutrient-rich compost that helps grow healthier gardens, stronger soils, and more resilient communities. It's a simple reminder that even the smallest actions, repeated over time, can make a lasting difference.

As we celebrate our nation's past, we're also excited about its future—a future where we all play a part in caring for the places we call home.

Thank you to our customers, neighbors, and community for helping us build a cleaner, healthier future, one compost bucket at a time.

From all of us at Forest Floor Compost, we wish you a safe, joyful, and memorable Independence Day.

Happy 250th Birthday, America! 🇺🇸🌱

What is “waste,” really? 🤔

Most people define waste as something useless.
Something dirty.
Something to throw away.

But at Forest Floor Compost, we see it differently.

Your coffee grounds, carrot peels, eggshells, and leftovers aren’t “waste” at all.

They’re future soil. 🌱

In a landfill, food scraps get buried under layers of trash without oxygen, creating methane pollution.

But in composting, those same scraps are recycled naturally into living, nutrient-rich compost that helps grow more food and rebuild healthy soil.

That means every meal you cook at home has the power to create something new.

You’re already making a healthier choice for yourself by cooking at home. Composting simply takes it one step further—for your community, your soil, and the future of our planet.

And the best part?

With Forest Floor Compost, you don’t have to deal with:
❌ Smelly piles
❌ Mixing ratios
❌ Complicated systems

Just put your food scraps in the bucket. We handle the rest.

Because nothing that can help grow life should ever be called “waste.” ♻️

🌎 Happy Earth Day from Forest Floor 🌱

Today, we celebrate the incredible planet we all call home—and the small, everyday choices that make a big difference. At Forest Floor, we believe that what we return to the earth matters just as much as what we take from it.

Composting isn’t just about reducing waste—it’s about giving back. Every banana peel, coffee ground, and food scrap becomes part of something bigger: healthier soil, stronger ecosystems, and a more sustainable future.

This Earth Day, let’s work together to:
🍃 Reduce what we throw away
🌿 Nourish the soil beneath our feet
🌍 Build a greener tomorrow—one compost bin at a time

Thank you for being part of the cycle. 💚
