✨💖TRUVY - STEEL MAGNOLIAS 💖✨
Finally, I got to design for my girl Truvy. Truvy is a big, bold character and she knows who she is so we decided that big blonde hair and a fierce beat would be the perfect choices. We did a blend of eight different eyeshadow colors across four different palettes, a mixed lip, bright red blush, and big bold lashes. I tried out Lilly Lashes which was incredible - no glue needed! For the hair, we didn’t want to change her style so we decided to add fun and unique hair accessories to enhance each look.

I learned a lot throughout this process and getting to play Truvy was the cherry on top of it all, honestly a dream come true. I absolutely loved getting to chance to work on this show and I even got a tattoo to commemorate the experience - an outline of Truvy’s wig and glasses!

✨💖SHELBY - STEEL MAGNOLIAS 💖✨
Shelby, Shelby - the biggest hair transformation of all! We kept her in a beautiful soft pink 80s makeup look but her hair was changed for all three scenes. The first wig was a lace front that enters the show rolled in pink snap curlers and was styled to be her wedding hair onstage. I was so proud of the finished product!

Wig 2 was another lace front, but with her transition to married life and the complications that followed, we wanted her to be a little simpler so we stayed with a long, straight wig with a side part. Finally, for act two, we decided to go for a “big chop” and switch to a more natural curl pattern style. We left some bang pieces and slicked back the sides, staying with an 80s feel but emphasizing the major change in Shelby’s life.

Ouiser was our tried and true, never changing diva who stayed the same throughout the show. We went with a nice short orange wig with more of a spiked look to emphasize her harder edges against Clairee’s softer curls. She did come in with a rain bonnet and hat in two scenes but thankfully we were styling hair onstage so could fix anything that needed a touch up!

M’Lynn’s look never changed but our biggest challenge was that her hair was fully washed and rolled during the first scene. Harling’s writing had her start the second scene already in rollers, which was brilliant. We did need a second wig for act two since the first wig was still wet, so we were able to acquire a double and style it the same way.

For Clairee, we wanted to play up her fun personality and willingness to change by having her in a different hairstyle for each scene. The first two were specified by the script - with scene one as her longest hairstyle and scene two being her “new short and sassy look!” We continued the trend for the last two scenes, including having her set in rollers at the top of scene four.

✨💖ANNELLE - STEEL MAGNOLIAS 💖✨
Steel Magnolias has always been a dream show of mine so when I was asked to design hair, makeup, and wigs I was honored! Each character had their own concept and look(s) throughout the show and I am so incredibly proud of how they all turned out!

For Annelle, we wanted to start with some big 80s hair but give her a bit of an unfinished/nervous feel at first with simple makeup to emphasize her lifestyle transition as she is realizing the extent of her husband’s betrayal. For scene 2, we wanted a major change - bigger, bolder hair (styled by Rachel Curtiss) and a bolder makeup lip. Third scene the only shift was makeup, going back to a basic look as she settles into her new life. Finally, we decided to use Tucker’s natural hair for the last scene out of homage to Shelby’s big chop during motherhood - something you can just run your fingers through and go!

I had such a fun time directing my second show at BVT this summer! My idea was to set it in Y2K with inspiration coming from some of my favorite witchy shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Halloweentown! The concept was each character had their own color to start, but after the introduction of our magical characters Schoolhouse Rocky and Sarah Suffrage the world was brought more to life with pieces like added throughout the numbers to help enhance the storytelling.

Working on a new play is always fun, and it’s even more special when it’s written by one of your besties! I got to not only costume design but also originate the role of Harper, your favorite next door neighbor. I had a lot of fun designing for modern characters with a variety of backgrounds and creating Gigi’s iconic patchwork dress.
