Artist Statement:
“I am proud to call the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) home. From the outside looking in, the RGV is defined by its location on the U.S.-Mexico border. But to me, my hometown transcends lines on maps, just as the people here transcend the border itself, constantly passing back and forth for school, work, or family. This place is striking, the flora: subtropical Cenizo shrub, desert nopales, and the prickly coronas de cristo all make up a garden of inspiration. The fauna: the shy ocelots, vibrant Pericos Mexicanos, the resilient opossums, all living alongside me. The people: the women sacrificing themselves for their family, the men silent and repressed, the elders gifting their wisdom, and all shaping my heart. This is where I learned to persevere through hardship. Ceramics has become my way to express and honor the culture around me. Clay is an extension of my identity, my history, and my understanding of it all, both in the literal and the metaphorical sense. Growing up in the estuary of the Rio Grande Valley, where the river forms the physical border between the U.S. and Mexico, I live just behind the river’s edge, surrounded by rich clay deposits that likely met the hands of my ancestors and now meet mine.“
