Susan’s big beautiful beach quilt is simple, but I can feel the sunshine on my face and hear the crash of the waves when I look at it. It just makes me happy!

So you wanna know why I sometimes load a quilt sideways on the frame?

1. The quilt is huge! and it’s easier to attach the short side and roll up the long side! That’s why this one is loaded this way. It’s a king size and was nearly 120” wide and 108” long (kings are usually wider than they are long). So in this case, I attached the 108” side to the leaders so I can roll up the 120.”
2. Sometimes I want a quilt design to go in a certain direction. For example if I want something linear to stitch from the top of the quilt to the bottom. My machine only stitches left to right or right to left on the frame. If I want a design to go from the top of the quilt to bottom, I’ll load it sideways!
3. Sometimes it’s a time saver. Certain designs are non-directional, so it doesn’t matter if they’re stitched from left to right across the quilt or top to bottom. So if I don’t want to advance the quilt as often, and just want to run 4 rows instead of 10, I’ll load it sideways!

Now you know! If you see your quilt loaded sideways, don’t worry, I have my reasons. 😉

I had the joy of helping Ceclea finish this vintage top that her mother made years ago from flour sack fabrics. She wanted it finished to gift to her little sister on her birthday. What a special gift and fabulous way to honor her mother’s hard work and creativity! These are the projects that make me love what I do. I hope it’s part of their family for years to come!

The best part of my job is seeing all of the unique quilts that people come up with. Sometimes they’re a reflection of their past, but my favorites are the ones that give insight to a person’s personality. This quilt made me laugh! Shea is someone with a good sense of humor and a little twist of quirkiness, as you can see in her quilt! I love it!

We quilted “two simple” on this one, a simple design that wouldn’t detract from the imagery. ☺️
