Mandala of the Month Challenge hosted by 12-month mandala challenge

Month 08

One day late but completed none the less.

For this month, I threw everything out the window and brought the concept from a WIP into the fold.

A month ago, I found a butterfly who had been knocked out of the sky by a storm. I brought him home, named him Butters, and set him up next to my drawing table. His presence eventually inspired an art project that was composed of a spiral sunflower with a memorial to the butterfly. (See last slide)

Since I've been elbow deep in drawing a complex sunflower I decided to continue the patterning into this month's mandala wedge.

Conveniently, drawing 1/12th of a sunflower and digitally repeating it is significantly faster than the inspirational artwork it came from.

Hopefully I can get both the sunflower and September's wedge completed before October begins.

Back-to-school season is not only for families with students. It changes the rhythm of entire communities.

Schedules tighten. Evenings get shorter. People start thinking about focus, routines, and the spaces where daily life happens.

That makes August a useful time to look at your walls with fresh attention. "The Guardian" may be the kind of work that helps a room feel more intentional as the season shifts.

Balance

Balance. Balance the right with the left, the work with the play, the stillness with the movement, the upper with the lower, and the inner with the outer.

This drawing is a rarity in my collection. I initially completed it in 2016 and placed in a portfolio for safe keeping. Nine years later, I dusted it off and fine tuned it as part of an oracle deck project I was commissioned to help create. The fine tuning involved smoothing out the stippling along with the addition of subtle color around the silhouette.
