WAW // WORLD THREE (ALT: WORLD FREE)

Was uh salon, temporary classroom, an’ sound art installation | Uh Dissertation on Freeform Rap Theory & Ebonics.

The evening began with a curated mix of experimental jazz an’ sound design. Including work from the following artists:

Diggs Duke
Nala Sinephro
Dorothy Ashby
Henry Franklin, et.al

The evening evolved into a gorgeous discussion about the technique of emceeing, where it intersects with scatting an’ vocal stimming, an’ the nature of Black art in general:

— It’s emphasis on feeling an’ instinct.
— How it has, an’ continues to manifest, in thuh body.

Went to Coney Island this past Wednesday to play some washboard an’ renew. 🌊 WAW // WORLD TOO was nothin’ short of eternal.

Some offerings to thee ancestors, uh baptism, an’ thuh ritual of song all took place.

Truly feelin’ changed / like uh new bein’.

WORDS ARE WORLDS // WORLD TOO was absolutely beautiful.

Uh celebration of tenacity an’ grit / thee enduring nature of thuh creative spirit—particularly, my own.

This week’s performance was rooted in memory an’ ancestry. I covered my hands in Indigo + Jagua, designed brass wire thimbles an’ wore them to play a rendition of my song “popSICKLE,” on washboard.

The memory of my grandfather—uh man uh thuh cloth as well as thuh soil—guided and grounded this piece. In KY, I grew up watching folks play the washboard in one of his churches.

That memory lives at the core of who I am in spirit an’ certainly in artistry. It’s the spirit of alchemy / of endurance / of making music (an’ magic) from what’s available to you.
