SPOTLIGHT: ‘Back in the Island’ by Amanda Valle.

Back in Island is a short film exploring the creative journey of artist Amanda Valle as she returns to her home in the Dominican Republic. Following an emotionally draining period, Amanda seeks comfort in the local culture by immersing herself in the colours and textures that were once so familiar. A journey of self discovery, the short film became the main source of inspiration for the artist’s new series composed of twelve paintings.

SPOTLIGHT: ‘Tips’ by Mercedes Papalia.

A desperate server confronts her disappointed table, a young couple celebrating their Tinder anniversary, after they write a negative online review about her service and Afro-Caribbean hair.

Madness ensues in the restaurant parking lot as the wronged server demands justice, and the couple are forced to come clean and puncture the veneer of their Insta-flawless relationship… questioning if they even know each other 'in real life'.

SPOTLIGHT: ‘Undeniably Young: Nora Young & the Six-Day Race’ by Julia Morgan.

It's 1936 and 19-year-old Nora Young is a multi-sport champion, brimming with trophies, talent and an indomitable zest for life. Breaking into the "weird and wonderful" world of men’s Six-Day bike racing, she seizes a rare opportunity to become one of few female cyclists to compete on a velodrome track "on the old speed saucer." Combining animation, archival materials, and footage of a spirited Young (age 95) telling her own story, UNDENIABLY YOUNG is a fast-paced, fun and feminist bike race film that finally gives a groundbreaking, nearly forgotten athletic hero her rightful place in history.

SPOTLIGHT: ‘Lost Time’ by Anna Radchenko

Featuring alternative pop singer and songwriter JONES, Lost Time is the latest fashion film by multidisciplinary artist Anna Radchenko. The film looks at the passing of time as something fleeting and out of our control. The older we become, the more we feel that we are at its mercy. A movement-led piece, Lost Time represents a positive journey into learning to coexist with time by rising above the uncertainties of the future.

SPOTLIGHT: ‘Our Mine’ by Shayna Strype.

In a handcrafted world where nature exists in harmony, a handful of greedy businessmen exploit a mountain’s riches. The female body becomes both landscape and characters in an exploration of what happens when Man considers himself separate from Nature. This ecofeminist tragicomedy blurs the line between fable and reality.

SPOTLIGHT: ‘Cancer, no kidding!’ by Emilie Marsollat.

CANCER, NO KIDDING ! is about Jeanne, new to chemo, her nurse Gaby, and some other patients who are seeking ways to deal with the side effects of the disease. But by “side effects”, they don’t mean nausea and so on… No! They mean the “real” side effects: the behavior of their relatives…
During this surprising quest, faced with the double issue “Cancer + Bullsh*t”, they built a new friendship and a new look on the relationship Patient/Caregiver. Which leads on an unexepected, touching, dramatic twist.

BWFF’S STORY

BROOKLYN WOMEN'S FILM FESTIVAL® (BWFF) showcases short films made by self-identifying women in four categories: comedic, dramatic, documentary and experimental. The 2018 festival will be June 21st-24th at The Wythe Hotel (Williamsburg, Brooklyn).

After experiencing a severe lack of networking and job opportunities for womxn in film, BWFF was created in 2016 to create a collaborative community for women in indie film to network, showcase and celebrate their achievements in film making. It values the eye of female storytellers that smash the Bechdel test, the patriarchy and that hire other womxn.

BWFF supports diverse voices and offers opportunities to female filmmakers by way of submission waiver programs. So far, we have offered more than 200 waiver programs to female filmmakers from all corners of the globe: Greece, Burkina Faso, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, France, India, Australia, just to name a few. We're focused on creating opportunities for women in film to excel and expand.
