This past year was my first full year as a mom and artist. I did not know what to expect and have made many big and small changes throughout the year. My husband and I have adjusted as needed, but we are still figuring out how to make the most of our time as business owners and parents.

My top nine highlights:
1) Postpartum Paintings exhibit at Tin Cup
2) You Can't Stay Here Forever series
3) Weaving Together Art Talk at the Old Stone House
4) Artist Talk for Time/Space exhibit at Compere
5) Co/Lateral, Interlinked, Powerhouse Arts, and RAICES exhibitions in NYC
6) Published five First Coat podcast
7) Studio visits with artists Jacquelyn Strycker, Jody MacDonald, Marela Zacarías, and Kim Hopson.
8) Joined Powerhouse Arts Ceramic Community Studio
9) I'm excited for the work I'm going to make in 2024

Nicole Mueller is a full-time visual artist based in San Francisco, CA. Her work includes large-scale paintings, murals, and installations that mimic the effects of stained glass. Driven by process, her abstract works are highly saturated, built with layers of collage-like shapes.

Learn more about Nicole and her intentionally designed public art on the First Coat podcast.

This week on First Coat we have Nicole Mueller, an artist and painter based in San Francisco. I heard about her work via her podcast, which she runs with fellow artist Amanda Adams, Beyond the Studio. Nicole has been working on a public art project in Tempe, Arizona, which is near where I’m from. I am very excited to share our conversation about her large park project and more!

I recently participated in an artist panel for the textile exhibition, Belonging, which was on view at the Old Stone House in Brooklyn earlier this year. My recent First Coat podcast episode is a recording of our art panel featuring three Brooklyn artists — Kimberly Bush, Traci Johnson, and myself and moderated by Grace Freedman of Why Not Art.

Each of us creates work with fiber, cloth, thread, and other textiles. Take a listen wherever you listen to podcasts and at distillcreative.com/firstcoat.

I'll be releasing my recent artist talk tomorrow!

I'm very excited to share this recording of an artist talk I recently participated in for Belonging, a textile art exhibition that was up at the Old Stone House earlier this year. This talk features three Brooklyn-based artists - myself, Kimberly Bush, and Tracy Johnson and moderator and curator of the exhibition, Grace Freedman of Why Not Art. We share the inspiration and process of our work with fiber, cloth, thread, and other textiles.

During this panel, Kimberly, Tracy, and I discussed our motivations for our work and how we hoped our art benefited the communities around us.

This episode is coming out tomorrow! Sign up for my newsletter to get a link straight to your inbox, or wait until tomorrow and take a listen at distillcreative.com/firstcoat or wherever you listen to podcasts (search for First Coat!)

I recently stumbled upon Fred Wilson’s Mind Forged Manacles/Manacle Forged Minds in Downtown Brooklyn when en route to DUMBO with my sister and baby. I love how this work is situated between in the plaza, forcing you to notice or ignore it.
