‘Famous’ Studio Gear
Bought from the estate of Kato Khandwala after a tragic motorcycle accident is this Gyraf G-Bus SSL Compressor clone that likely saw use on mixes for Paramore, The Pretty Reckless & My Chemical Romance. Excellent for the snappy and ‘present’ mix bus ‘glue’ that the SSL 4000 compressor was legendary for, but with the added benefit of a side-chain filter on the detection circuit to allow for more aggressive compression on mixes while avoiding the overly ‘grippy’ pumping effect on low frequency material. Set to the classic 2:1 ratio, 30ms and auto release setting with the HP filter at 200Hz and you can drive it up to 4-6 dB of compression on the entire mix to fatten everything up nice and smoothly.

‘Famous’ Gear of the Studio
About a decade ago Studio G of Soundtrax in the Flatiron District was being dismantled as the facility fully turned over to exclusively post-production services for film & TV. These diffusion panels are a small part of the back wall of the old ‘live end, dead end’ layout of the control room where Andy Wallace mixed Nevermind, Jeff Buckley’s solo record, and many others. Fished out of a dumpster, in the rain, at 9 or 10 at night; worth the ensuing cold to save them from the DoS trucks. E-Candles from vibes, of course…

‘Famous’ Gear of the Studio: NuMu bus compressor previously owned by Tom Elmhirst. Famous lover of the original all tube Vari-Mu design he apparently wasn’t as thrilled with the less colored SS output gain stage topology of this modernized version (according to the tech at EL where he was in residence at the time). For the heavier and punchier music over here, the NuMu serves the purpose perfectly of softening top end while preserve low end slap than the sonically warmer & rounder original design. Run the input nice and hard to drive the input gain stage tubes and just kiss the compression slightly with the HIP setting in place to get some of that silky top end velvet that the original (with the T-BAR mod) was famous for.
