Rather than presenting marriage as a tidy moral institution, MERRILY WE GO TO HELL embraces jealousy, adultery, drinking, sexual freedom and unconventional arrangements with candor, refusing to punish or resolve its characters’ transgressions. Dorothy Arzner, one of the few women directing major studio films at the time, and a pioneer of the still-young art form to boot, brings an especially sharp perspective to the story, balancing melodrama with wit and a strikingly modern sense of female agency.

MERRILY WE GO TO HELL is September’s PRE-CODE PARADE pick, on 35mm Tuesday 9/8.

Part of THE CLASS OF ’96, our new series MY FIRST TIME with Shay Filmore kicks off with Mike Leigh’s 1996 Palme d’Or winner SECRETS & LIES, a film that shot up Shay’s watchlist during Marianne Jean-Baptiste’s press tour for 2024’s HARD TRUTHS (a perfect movie).

Jean-Baptiste praised Leigh’s meticulous improvisational rehearsal processes, a defining feature of his oeuvre. Join Shay as she watches their first collaboration… for the first time!

SECRETS & LIES screens Monday 8/31. Only a few seats left!
