"Arts from the Motherland”
Reception : Saturday Oct 8th at the Thames Art Center] 6-9pm
We are excited to host a large Group Exhibition featuring 11 artists from the AFRICAN continent, curated and presented by Dozie Arts.
This exhibition will introduce to New York eleven emerging artists drawn from Africa and the African Diaspora.
The richness of traditional African cultures, the painful passage into and through colonialism and the deep shadows and conflicts which continue, visions and depictions of Black skin, the strength of an African woman as she dances or sits in stillness... each of these young painters grapples with the reality of the contemporary moment and presents a creative vision which is both disarmingly beautiful and politically confrontational.

Opening night is Saturday Oct 8th at the Thames Art Center] in BK . Time 6-9pm
The show will run on till Monday (Oct. 8th.-10th.)

The background song “The Message” by Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five is what brought me to NY in the 80s. I landed in NY with $400 in my pocket , and a bug dream .
( A few years later I had the honor of spending a day with the Grand Master , photographing him in my studio in different sets.)
And here I am at my studio, after all these years, so grateful that I am able to celebrate and share the journey of years of challenges , yet with joy ,expressing and channeling the process of creativity and healing.
Blessings to all of us.

( scroll ➡️) Congratulations to the artist, who joined us from Nigeria via zoom conversation (see 4th. image), answering questions that were asked by visitors of the show.
The exhibition that is curated by Vincent Ugokwe of DozieArts will be up Monday-Friday, through Nov. 12th. noon-5 pm.at Thames Art Center, 147 Thames st. Brooklyn, NY 11237

Atiti means “waste” in Igbo Language . The exhibition examines the life of people living at the so called bottom of social structure. They might be considered unimportant just like waste, but their lives are full of deep and diverse stories as depicted in the various paintings
